Environmental Scanning at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education: A Progress Report by Edward G. Simpson, Jr., Donna L. McGinty and James L. Morrison Simpson, Edward G. Jr., Donna L. McGinty, and James L. Morrison. (1987, Autumn) Environmental Scanning at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education: A Progress Report. Continuing higher education review Brown and Weiner (1985) define environmental scanning as “a kind of radar to scan the world systematically and signal the new, the unexpected, the major and the minor” (p. ix). Aguilar (1967) has defined scanning as the systematic collection of external information in order to (1) lessen the randomness of information flowing into the organization and (2) provide early warnings for managers of changing external conditions. More specifically, Coates (1985) has identified the objectives of an environmental scanning system as:
  • detecting scientific, technical, economic, social, and political interactions and other elements important to the organization defining the potential threats, opportunities, or potential changes for the organization implied by those events

Reatha Clark King Born: Major discipline: Physical Chemistry Died: Minor discipline: Thermochemistry
Reatha Clark was born in Pavo, Georgia on April 11, 1938. Her father Willie was a farm laborer who left the family when Reatha was a child. Her mother, Ola Watts Campbell then moved the family to Moultree, Georgia where she worked as a domestic to support her three children. Reatha graduated from high school in Moultree in 1954 as valedictorian. She was awarded a scholarship to attend Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, as a home economics major. Her chemistry professor at Clark College was Dr. Alfred Spriggs, a fantastic teacher and role model. A black Ph.D. chemist, he inspired Reatha to pursue a career in chemistry. This meant she would be going to graduate school. In her senior year at Clark she applied for, and was awarded, a Woodrow Wilson scholarship. This, along with the support of her family, enabled her to enroll in the University of Chicago as a graduate student in chemistry. In 1958 she began her graduate studies in physical chemistry with a focus on thermodynamics. She earned her master's degree and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago where her studies included the thermochemistry of fused salts, fluorine compounds, and interhalogen compounds. She was awarded her Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1962.

DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION NYCHS
Excerpts
Presentation
Page 9 of 14 The Osborne Family Papers consist of correspondence and the records of the Osborne family and related branches of Coffin, Devens, Garrison, Harris, Mott, Pelham, Storrow, and Yarnall families. The bulk dates of the papers are 1812-1968, with a concentration in the period 1880-1925. Auburn, New York, has been the Osborne family home since the early 19th century. Relatives whose correspondence is represented among the papers also resided in Boston, and Springfield, Mass., and Philadelphia, Penn. Genealogical charts have been prepared . . . while they are not meant to be comprehensive, the charts will assist in identifying members who figure prominently in the correspondence. Civil War General and U.S. Attorney General Charles Devens (depicted in sketch above) was Thomas Mott Osborne's granduncle; that is, his maternal grandfather's brother. Putting it another way: Charles Devens was the uncle of TMO's mother, Agnes. A Harvard law graduate (1840), Charles Devens practiced law from 1841 to 1849 in Mass. and served as a State Senator (1848 - 1849). From 1849 until 1853 he served as U.S. Marshal. In 1854 he resumed the practice of law in Worcester.

1926-90: Baptist clergyman, civil rights activist; born in Linden, Ala. An early civil rights organizer and leading confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., he was pastor of the West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. throughout his civil rights career (196190). He was King's chosen successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (196877). Although he was a competent leader, the SCLC never regained the influence it had under King. He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for Andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.
