Fixing Intelligence:
For a More Secure America
by William E. Odom
"General Odom uses the unique insight gained from years of experience in the intelligence business to explain in plain language an issue that is critical to U.S. national security—intelligence community reform. A valuable resource to expert and novice alike, it serves both as an excellent introduction to the intelligence community, and also as a valuable guide to the current debate over how to proceed with intelligence community reform."—Senator Richard C. Parenting for an Age of Information
Chapter One - Inventing
The sandbox is not what it used to be - neither is the back yard, the family room or the school down the street. Raising a son or daughter in these times calls for parents with skill, humor and inventiveness. While today's schools stagger under escalating criticism, conscientious parents find themselves filling in the blanks, providing their children with enriched learning excursions to offset the ditto sheet diets and dreary offerings that characterize too many of today's educational cafeterias. When change and new technologies sweep through our society, the challenge facing parents can be awesome. Will this newest bandwagon keep curiosity and a sense of wonder alive in our children? How do we raise this generation to greet the next century with flexibility, imagination and a resourceful spirit? As change becomes a constant, we need a generation which views change as an adventure, an opportunity and a benefit. We must raise a generation which has embraced a change ethic . They will thrive on change, considering it an opportunity to stretch out into the future and grow. Flexibility and problem solving can replace the GNP as the new indicators of growth of our society. Creating and responding to opportunities is an essential skill in our world today, in much the same way reading was in the eighteenth century.

The bittersweet drama INVENTING THE ABBOTTS chronicles the coming of age of two brothers, Doug and Jacey Holt, played with touching sincerity by Joaquin Phoenix (TO DIE FOR) and Billy Crudup (SLEEPERS). Set in 1957 in Haley, Illinois, the show is reminiscent of several old movies, but the story remains fresh and relevant. Doug has fewer social graces than his slightly older brother Jacey. Doug will try anything, including painting on fake sideburns, to impress the girls. Jacey, on the other hand, attracts female companionship like honey attracts flies. As much as they profess their differences, they are remarkably similar in looks and tastes.

INTERVIEWS WORLD MEDIA WATCH P.M. CARPENTER MAUREEN FARRELL ... FAQ Is the NYT Inventing Quotes Again? A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY BuzzFlash Preface: The internationally renowned French Paper Le Monde charges the New York Times with misquoting a French judge in order to write an "alarmist story," claiming that dozens of French Muslims have left to fight the Americans in Iraq. It should be noted by BuzzFlash that the NYT , in writing such a story, is following the Bush line that foreign terrorists are behind the attacks on American forces [ LINK ]. Of course, then there are U.S. military commanders that say this is not true. In fact, different Bush administration officials, on any given day, emphatically attribute the attacks to each of several different sources, then the next day change their minds. The Pentagon even refutes Bush's "foreign fighter" theory. [ LINK ] It's kind of like watching a dark comedy of a musical chairs blame game. It is a sign of the Bush Cartel's incompetence and ineptness that they don't seem to have a clue as to who is attacking our troops.

Co-necting Across the Millennium

Co-nect, Cambridge, MA
Project Overview
Students will explore the impact of technology on the world
by researching current or past scientific advancements,
then developing a new invention or technology for the next
millennium. Students conduct hands-on research on the
usability of current inventions and brainstorm criteria
for a good invention. Each student, or group of students then researches the development of one invention or technology during any time period over the last 1,000 years, and writes entries on index cards for a classroom timeline. As a final product, students create a new invention or technology for the millennium, and share their work at a classroom science "Trade Show 2000," and online in the Inventing the Future project. Driving Questions: How has technology changed the world? What technologies or inventions do we need to improve the world in the next millenium?

The Invention of Diplomacy
By Allan Calhamer
As the war drew to a close in 1945, I read an article on postwar planning in the magazine Life . This article reviewed the history of the Congress of Vienna and the subsequent period to 1914, arguing that a world containing several ‘Great Powers’ all roughly equal in strength would offer the best guarantee of peace because whenever one of them acted aggressively the remainder could unite against them, causing them to back down before a war could break out. Regardless of whether such a plan would have worked or could have been brought about in the real world, the system of multiple and flexible checks and balances offered itself as a possible basis for a strategic parlour game of some depth and colour. In the course of debating at High School. I then encountered an argument against ‘World Government’, the hot topic of the late 40s, which was that national governments are checked by both internal and external factors but a ‘World Government’ would have no external checks, hence it would be more likely to become tyrannical. Another debater and I suggested a game simulating the grand alliances of European history, but as we used only two players and didn’t find any way to simulate a third or fourth party it ended in failure. Meanwhile, several of us were playing Hearts, a card game in which several players participate, each independently of the others. We observed that the game was best if all the other played co-operated against the current leader. Thus the lead would tend to change hands, giving more players a chance to win the game. Competition was further enhanced by a ruling that if two players tied for the lead at the end, then
