82. Abraham Gesner Saved The Whales
Who really saved the whales? Abraham Gesner did, by inventing kerosene. This single page is an exposition by James S. Robbins of changing technology and changing pressures on the ecology.
http://alts.net/ns1625/gesner.html
Abraham Gesner
Abraham Gesner ... saved more whales
than Green Peace ever will ...

In 1849, Gesner devised a method to distill kerosene from petroleum.
In 1846 there were 735 ships in the whaling fleet.
Thirty years later, in 1876, the fleet was down to 39 ships.
Kerosene had taken over the whale oil market.

The price of sperm oil reached its high of $1.77 per gallon in 1856;
by 1896 it sold for 40 cents. Yet it could not keep pace with the price
of refined petroleum, which dropped from 59 cents per gallon in 1865
to a fraction over seven cents in 1895.
How Capitalism Saved the Whales
by James S. Robbins
It is an article of faith among environmentalists that the ills of the world can be traced to economic and technological development, especially since the industrial revolution. The changes that took place in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such as harnessing new sources of energy (moving from water to coal power, for example), the development of the factory system, and the human population explosion, they say, led directly to the current problems with waste disposal, air and water pollution, overcrowding, and misused resources, not to mention global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, and other highly speculative developments.
Fixation on doomsaying can cause environmentalists to forget that the negative consequences of industrialization are minute compared to the positive developments of the industrial age. People are healthier, live longer, and are more productive than ever before in history. But defenders of industrialism can go even further to show that in many cases technological progress has benefited the environment. This is vividly demonstrated in the case of one of the most emotion-laden symbols of environmentalism, the whales.

Inventing There is no one right way to discover the "right topic" to write about, but some strategies writers use: Keep a reading journal . Jot down ideas at any time record your responses to the assigned readings. Pick passages from the readings that pique your interest, quote the passages, and discuss why they struck you. If you can write your thoughts in a journal throughout the semester, you can leaf through that journal as you search for a topic. Freewriting is designed to trick your unconscious into shaking loose some ideas: set yourself an amount of time say five minutes and write non-stop for that period. Do not pause; do not even lift your pen from the paper (or your fingers from the keyboard). This helps push you past writer's block; you may stumble into some interesting territory if you keep freewriting.
And consider these visual approaches:
And there are other ways to go from the very broad range of your topic: Previous Page Next Page

Help The Process Handbook Project Matrix Of Change Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century We believe that a powerful basis for understanding how information technology can help people work together more effectively will result from a better understanding of the nature of coordination. Therefore, work in the center includes studies of coordination in many different forms: (1) Organizational structures and information technology - studying how people work together now and how they might do so differently with new kinds of information technology. (2) Coordination technology - designing and studying innovative computer systems that help people work together in small or large groups (e.g., "groupware", "computer-supported cooperative work", and "electronic markets"). (3) Coordination theory - developing and testing theories about how coordination can occur in a variety of systems such as human organizations, markets, and computer networks. The Politics of News Media

Distributed by Wadsworth H ow much of what the news media tell us is true, and how does it control our view of the world? In this illuminating, provocative critique of the news media, Michael Parenti examines the subtle but profound ways in which the media influence and manipulate the public's perception of reality. He attacks the widely held belief that the news media are controlled by liberals and liberal opinionand he clearly depicts the news media as a controlling institution of the American capitalist system, an institution that serves the interests of the rich and powerful while appearing to serve the many. In this thoroughly revised and updated edition, Parenti dissects news coverage of the most recent world eventsincluding the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Gulf War, the U.S. invasion of Panama, and the contra war in Nicaraguaand demonstrates how the media shape public awareness and attitudes through distortion or suppression of specific information. His argument will reeducate and enrage a public that has come to believe in an impartial, free press. The Progressive magazine calls Inventing Reality "essential to a fuller understanding of what we read and see daily."

Consider how biotechnology might have shaped the year 2030, Judah Folkman quotes Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman: "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." Studying how cancer grew early in his career, nearly 40 years ago, Folkman developed the notion of angiogenesis: In order to grow and spread beyond a small mass, he posited that blood vessels were needed to nourish a tumor and metastases. If there were no blood vessels, cancer would remain small and unthreatening. Looking at the same thing others had before, he saw something different, and in this way, invented the now-booming field of angiogenesis research. It took decades for Folkman's ideas to be taken seriously, but now angiogenesis has become an area to which physicians and researchers from nearly every specialty in medicine are looking to understand the underlying disease processes of an ever-expanding panoply of disorders: cancer, heart disease, arthritis, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, endometriosis, and more. In 1999 alone, 1,400 papers were published dealing with angiogenesisan indication of how important this area has become.

Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War was a major innovation in the recounting of the past. Rather than telling stories for entertainment or mythological reasons, Thucydides tried to analyse the past and form a coherent narrative. To do this required coming to grips with less than perfect source material. Thucydides discusses his solution.

The Story Behind the Lisa (and Macintosh) Interface Date: Mon, 17 Jun 1996 17:13:10 -0700 From: "Rod Perkins" To: "Multiple recipients of list cpsr-history@cpsr.org" Although the Macintosh receives the recognition for creating Apple's desktop metaphor, the development of Lisa user interface pre-dates the Mac. Many of the concepts developed for the Lisa were used in the Mac's design. Other Lisa features are creeping into the UI in 1996 as Apple implements multi-processing and protected memory. Although the Lisa was not a commercial success, without the early work done by the Lisa team, there would not be the Macintosh we know today. I was among the first software engineers to work on the applications for the Lisa and its user interface. Myself, and two others from the Lisa "Filer" team wrote a paper in 1989 that described how the Lisa's UI was designed. The paper was to be a chapter in the book, "The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design", edited by Brenda Laurel, Addison-Wesley, 1990. However, as someone pointed out earlier, Apple was actively litigating against Microsoft at the time, so it was though better not to have the paper published. The paper included screen shots that pre-dates the legendary visits to Parc by Steve and other people from Apple. No doubt the Parc visits provided inspiration but its was not "standard myth that Apple lifted the user interface of the Lisa and Mac in whole from the Star".

Abstract
Around the world, there are unprecedented funding opportunities for creating digital cultural content. However, to date there has been relatively little harmonization of the standards frameworks used in the creation, management and preservation of this content, resulting in duplication of effort, higher costs and diminished interoperability of the end results. An international group of stakeholders are hoping to address this situation by agreeing on a common set of core values and seeking to leverage existing synergies wherever possible.
Digital Rockpools beside Digital Oceans
It will probably not come as a huge surprise to readers of this publication that there are a number of compelling arguments in favor of using digital communication networks to provide access to information, regardless of whether the information was "born digital", or represents digitally-reformatted surrogates of extant analog materials. Chief amongst the advantages of digital information over analog physical counterparts are the comparatively low costs of creation, storage, management and preservation, the theoretical absence of limits on the number of concurrent users, the relative ease with which digital materials can be re-used or re-purposed and, since the Internet is available to a small but growing percentage of the world's populace
