GLOBAL CRISIS OVER IRAQ
United States: inventing demons
There is a coalition of the radical right in the United States, including the odd Democrat, that has long held that patriotic mobilisation is important in holding American society together. When detente broke out in the 1970s, these hawks worried about any reduction in international tension, however slight. Since 11 September 2001 they have had no more worries. by Philip S Golub
War and militarisation would have been impossible without 11 September, which tipped the institutional balance in favour of the new right. There were other possible responses that would have had a less destabilising effect on the world. One would have been to strengthen multilateral cooperation to contain the stateless trans-national terrorist threat, and seek to reduce tensions and resolve conflicts in areas at risk, notably the Middle East. Another would have been Keynesian-style regional development on Marshall Plan lines. This would have encouraged local forces for democracy, and would undoubtedly have been more effective than war in stimulating the US and global economies.

X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System
Computer Mouse
Patent Number(s) 3,541,541
Inducted 1998
Douglas Engelbart's patent for the mouse is only a representation of his pioneering working designing modern interactive computer environments.
A main concern for Engelbert was how the computer could be used as a useful tool in tomorrow's office. While at SRI, he developed a hypermedia groupware system called NLS (oN-Line System). NLS utilized two-dimensional computerized text editing, and the mouse, used to position a pointer into text, was a critical component. During a 1968 demonstration, Engelbart first introduced NLSthis was the world debut of the mouse, hypermedia, and on-screen video teleconferencing. His project became the second host on Arpanet, predecessor of the Internet.

Inventor Bio

Engelbart was born and grew up near Portland, Oregon. He served in the Navy as an electronics technician during World War II, and received his B.S. from Oregon State University. After working for NASA's Ames Research Laboratory, he received a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He then joined the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), earning a number of patents related to computer components. In the 1970s and 1980s, Engelbart was a Senior Scientist at Tymshare, Inc., later acquired by McDonnell-Douglas. In 1989, he founded The Bootstrap Institute, which promotes the development of collective IQ through worldwide computer networks.

DEMOCRACY SOFTENS FORCES OF CHANGE
Inventing national identity
In the dispute over who "owns" Kosovo, Serbian and Albanian nationalists brandish arguments from history going back to antiquity or the Middle Ages. Yet nations are a recent creation, barely two centuries old. They were literally invented. And, once invented, they were consolidated by founding myths - and sometimes by bouts of ethnic cleansing. The recent upsurge of nationalism in Europe reflects above all a failure of politics and the difficulty of forging new collective identities based on a genuine political project. by Anne-Marie Thiesse
Over a century ago the French historian Ernest Renan predicted the death of nations in Europe. "Nations are not eternal. They had a beginning and they will have an end. And they will probably be replaced by a European confederation" (1). His prophecy would be about to come true as the millennium draws to a close, were it not for an inherent contradiction in European politics. Just as the maturing European Union is beginning to supersede the nation-state, the banner of nationalism is being raised all over the continent - not only in former communist countries but also in Western European states like Spain, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

66. Moral Skepticism [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
The theory, supported by J.L. Mackie in Ethics inventing Right and Wrong, that belief in objective moral principles cannot be justified.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/m/m-skepti.htm
Moral Skepticism
Moral skepticism is an epistemological position that we do not have knowledge or justification for believing in objective moral principles. Moral skepticism does not involve the rejection of moral values themselves, but simply the denial that we have knowledge of an objective realm of morals. Moral skeptics sometimes argue that moral values are similar to aesthetic judgments. Aesthetic judgments such as "This painting is beautiful" and "The food in this restaurant is pretty awful" are not objective in nature are based on human preferences. Analogously, moral skeptics argue that moral judgments like "premarital sex is wrong" or "abortion is wrong" are also not objective in nature. The most effective argument for moral skepticism is to question the existence of the realms in which objective moral principles are thought to reside. If the very notion of a spirit-like realm of abstract entities is called into question, then moral principles cannot be objective in that sense. MACKIE'S DEFENSE. In Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong Mackie concludes that even if values are not objective, this does not mean that morality is useless. Instead, Mackie emphasizes the importance of creating moral guidelines which regulate the actions of ourselves and others.

Science Fiction and Inventors You want to be an inventor but you do not know where to start? ABOUT INVENTING By Ronald J. Riley This is aimed at 5th through 12th grade students. So you want to be an inventor. Almost everyone invents, but they do not recognize that their idea is an invention. All children invent, children are often more inventive than adults, and a few even get patents. You may read about twenty children inventors in "Brainstorm" , soon to be released in paperback at a much lower price. Most people's thinking becomes rigid as they grow up. The key to inventing is not becoming rigid in your thinking. As people gain more experience they tend to rule out creative ideas. An inventor strikes a balance between between being practical and being creative. All inventors, even adults produce a hundred or more ideas that are not practical to get a patent for every idea that is worth pursuing.
An invention is a new way of solving a problem. Most inventions are made possible by those inventors who have proceeded us.

CURRICULUM LIST AND PRICES document.write(title); Kids Invent!™ develops and distributes curriculum for one week summer camps, after school programs, and classroom learning that foster creative thinking, inventing and entrepreneurial enterprise among elementary and middle school children. The curriculum and design of the programs were created by Professors Ed Sobey and Timothy M. Stearns of the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at California State University, Fresno. Kids Invent!™ stimulates the creative instincts of children to invent by having them design and build mock-ups of toys, prepare business plans, present marketing materials, and create web pages. As they develop their toys, kids learn to present their toy concepts to other students, demonstrate their use, think through the price and cost of the toy, and work with other kids in a variety of tasks. Kids Invent!™ encourages kids to continue applying their creativity talents long after the program has concluded. It orients them to opportunities to showcase their inventions at the national Toy Hall of Fame and in invention contests and programs. Kids Invent! also empowers kids to consider commercial applications of their ideas.

Inventing the Subject: Gender, Sex, and Texts, 350-1500
This course will explore the cultural configurations of gender and sexuality as they are represented in several kinds of writings and cultural productions (literature, philosophy, historical writings, biography, medical writings, legal documents, visual arts) in order to recover what we can call the "invention" of the human subject in the centuries before the modern era. Central to the "inventions" attributed to this era is the meaning of sexual love, traditionally known as "courtly love," associated with the literature of the 12th through 15th centuries. We will also explore the gendering of literacy itself and the various cultural alignments of masculinity and femininity, and investigate the status and identities of women writers like Marie de France and Heloise. Students will also be introduced to doing research on the Internet and the World Wide Web via The Labyrinth , a World Wide Web server for medieval studies hosted by Georgetown. Students will be invited to attend a special cultural studies conference

by Suzanne Ross March 23, 2004 For over twenty years scientists have been dreaming about creating a real P.A.D.D., the slate device that the inhabitants of Star Trek used to record and access data as they moved around the starship Enterprise. Even better, the handwriting recognition in Tablet PC can take your handwriting (as long as your writing doesn't resemble chicken scratches) and transform it into digital text. You can then search your handwritten notes. One Stroke, Two Strokes, Three Strokes and More

A character in Chinese can be a pictograph, or composite themes that you group together, what we would call letters. But all of the characters are made up of individual strokes, which is similar to our printing, but quite different from English cursive handwriting. In some ways, Asian writing is simpler to recognize, since the boundaries between strokes are clearer than the boundaries in cursive writing. Microsoft researchers Patrice Simard Chris Meek and Bo Thiesson have developed methods to improve recognition of Asian characters for the Tablet PC. Simard has worked on one and two stroke characters, while Meek and Thiesson have developed algorithms to improve three and four stroke characters.
