Welcome to IT OK
Helping children achieve their potential includes offering them the chance to use and understand computers and the internet. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are much less likely to have computers at home. So some of the children with most to gain from IT have the least opportunity to use it. This is why NCH launched IT OK, to campaign for safe and equal access to IT for all children. More on IT OK

The internet is a wonderful place, full of endless amounts of information and resources. However, some people have used the internet to promote things we do not want our children to be exposed to. Some sites are full of pornographic materials, drug information, pretty much anything you can think of. Also, perverts and criminals have utilized the internet to find their victims. Should you avoid your child using the internet? No, there are things you can do to protect your children. As with everything your children do, you should get familiar with the internet and learn the possible dangers. There is software now that prohibits certain materials from being accessed from your computer. Cyber Patrol is perhaps the best tool there is. You can download a working version by clinking on the button below.

Internet Safety Guide
Child Safety on the Internet
illions of people are now connecting their personal computers to telephone lines so that they can "go online." Traditionally, online services have been oriented toward adults, but that's changing. An increasing number of schools are going online, and in many homes, children are logging on to commercial services, private bulletin boards, and the Internet. As a parent, you need to understand the nature of these systems. Online services are controlled by commercial, self-regulated businesses that may screen or maintain editorial control of the material contained on their systems. Computer bulletin boards, called BBSes, can be operated by individuals, businesses, or organizations. The material presented is usually theme oriented, offering information about hobbies and interests. While there are BBSes that feature "adult" oriented material, most attempt to keep minors from gaining access. The Internet, a global "network of networks," is not governed by any entity. This leaves no checks on the kind of information that is maintained by and accessible to Internet users.

From Safe Kids.com, a list of internet safety rules.

Kids' Rules for Online Safety
I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.

The Internet Safety Debate
Yes it's OK to filter Internet content in schools. No students should learn how to handle the Internet as it is. The debate continues… no solution in sight. You'd search far and wide to find an adult who does not support protecting children from pornography, hate speech, and other undesirable content on the Internet. But exactly how to keep children safe has sparked intense debate among parents, educators, politicians, technological experts, and others. Some observers question children's need to use the Internet at all. Why not simply use more traditional methods of research and information collection, they ask. Why not keep children, especially young children, from using the Internet? We need to allow kids to use the Internet "because the amount of educational material on the Internet outweighs the minor inconvenience of having to monitor what is going on," said Barbara Feldman, who writes a syndicated newspaper column, "Surfing the Net With Kids." [See below to learn how to subscribe to an online version of the column.]

Sasser.B and it's variants are network-aware worms that do not require e-mail or user interaction to spread. Sasser takes advantage of a buffer-overrun flaw in the Local Security Authority Subsystem (LSASS), which allows an attacker to gain control of infected systems. The worms use a bootstrap effect to infect new machines first then download the full code from a previously infected machine later. Sasser randomly scans local networks and the Internet to look for additional systems to infect which can significantly slow down normal traffic on the Internet.

This is the single MOST valuable thing you can do for your Child's health and safety online. Work as a team to set your boundaries. discuss with your child exactly what is OK and what not OK regarding what kind of websites are appropriate for to visit, which chat rooms to visit and what kind of things to talk about there. Set logical for when your child disregards your rules (like grounded from the internet for 1 week), but do NOT threaten them to ban the internet forever. Stress to your child that they need to tell you if they get any weird upsetting messages while chatting, and that you will not be angry with them nor will you ban them of the Internet as a result. Make it clear to the child that you understand the child cannot control what people say to him or her and there are not to blame if this happens.
