WORKFORCE PEOPLE OUR DIRECTOR STAFF From the experienced gained in four years of working with the use of the Internet in education CIESE has come to the realization that it is important to balance protecting students with the need to utilize the technology to its full potential. For these reasons, rather than advocating policies that completely restrict students and teachers in regards to the content of their web sites, we advocate the following:
Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) - These are basically "contracts" that outline how students can use the technology, what they cannot do with it and the consequences for violating the policy. These should include school web pages and the content that is allowed on them. AUPs should be signed by an authorized representative of the school, students and parents so that all concerned parties are aware of the policy. No Student Names - We recommend that when referring to students on a web page that either their names not be used or only their first names be posted. Some schools have found the use of "nicknames" to be an effective way of dealing with this issue.

Parents and Educators: Thanks to the Internet, our children have unprecedented access to the world's knowledge base. From a computer in a school library or on a kitchen table, today's student literally can access information virtually anywhere with a few keystrokes and an inexpensive modem. Through e-mail and discussion groups, children share hobbies and learn about different cultures in online communities of children around the world. We at Microsoft believe our children will adopt what we call a Web Lifestyle, in which the Internet and its resources are a foundation of their life. Whether planning a vacation, scheduling automobile repair or attending a college class, they will depend on the Internet as we rely today on the telephone. Yet like most communities, the Internet has its perils. Many parents and teachers would never consider allowing children to wander unaccompanied through the streets of a major city, and nor should they permit children unsupervised access to the Internet.

The Internet and the World Wide Web are wonderful information resources for both parents and children. Children can learn a lot by doing research for school reports, by sending and receiving email, and by playing educational games. But in an environment where a child old enough to punch in a few letters on her keyboard can literally access the world, parents need to be vigilant about monitoring what their children see and hear, who they meet, and what they share about themselves on the Web. That free, uncensored connection to the world can potentially be dangerous. A Vast Network of Information
The World Wide Web, one portion of the Internet, is a vast network of virtual libraries. Not everything in those libraries, however, is something you'd like to see - or have your child see. For example, your 8-year-old might go to a search engine and type in the word "Lego." But with just one missed keystroke, she might enter the word "Legs" instead and be directed to thousands of websites with a focus on legs - some of which may contain pornographic material. This means your child's best online protection is you. By talking to your child often about potential online dangers and monitoring her computer use, you'll be giving her the tools she needs to learn to surf safely.

Teens Staying Safe Safety Basics
How could we exist without the Internet? That's how most of us keep in touch with friends, find homework support, research a cool place to visit, or find out the latest news. But just as there are millions of places to visit and things to do, there are also lots of place to waste time - and even get into trouble. And, just like the rest of the world, there are some people who can take advantage of you - financially or physically. You've probably heard stories about people who get into trouble in chat rooms. Because users can easily remain anonymous, chat rooms often attract people who are interested in more than just chatting. These people will sometimes ask visitors for information about themselves, their families, or where they live - information that shouldn't be given away. Usually, the people who request personal information like home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses use this information to fill mailboxes and answering machines with advertisements. In some cases, though, predators may use this information to begin illegal or indecent relationships or to harm a person's or family's well-being. It's rare, but it does happen. Of course, the Internet is home to millions of places you can and should visit. Like a library, the Web can take you to the ends of the earth with the information it contains.

Email this page to a friend with a personal message Safety for kids on the Net is front-page news now that the Supreme Court has struck down the Computer Decency Act, returning sole responsibility for kids' online activities to parents. Whether or not you opt to use parental-control software, children need to be taught a set of online safety rules. A lot has been written for parents on this subject, but here are some resources written specially for kids. Review them with your kids, and use them as a starting point to create your own set of online rules.

Internet Safety and Safe Surfing for Kids
Many parents are faced with the problem of having children who are far more knowledgeable about computers and the internet that they are. So how can these parents protect their children from all of the dangers that are lurking on the world wide web? Knowledge is the key. I hope to teach you the facts you need to know to protect your kids from stumbling across pornography, child molesters, hate groups, and all the other dangers available on the internet. Internet Safety Tips
Kids: Never give out personal information - not even what school you go to.
Kids: Never arrange to meet someone in person that you've chatted with online.
Kids: Never give out your password to anyone except your parents - not even your best friend.
Kids: Remember - that kid you are chatting with might really be an older man pretending to be a child.

How To Make Sure The Internet Is Safe For Your Children
Internet Safety Main Page Other Technology Protecting Your Family From Identify Theft In The Cyber Realm I Kids Links Other Links A major survey undertaken by the Media Awareness Network and Industry Canada in March 2001 found that 99% of Canadian children have used the internet, with 79% going online at home. The survey reveals that parents don't always know what their kids are up to. For instance, among the young internet users who have received pornographic junk mail, 78% didn't tell their parents.
Easy access to offensive content on the internet is just one concern of parents trying to shepherd their children through a field of modern technology. Chatrooms (allowing real-time, typed conversations online), instant messaging (a "chat service" for a closed group of friends) and also cell phones, pagers and walkie-talkies all connect your children to the big, bad world.
Electronic media are seductive and it's hard for children to walk away from. It's up to the parents to provide the control.
