Go to Top Go to Learning Tree When Senator Ted Kennedy heard in 1968 that the pioneering Massachusetts company BBN had won the ARPA contract for an "interface message processor (IMP)," he sent a congratulatory telegram to BBN for their ecumenical spirit in winning the "interfaith message processor" contract. The Internet, then known as ARPANET, was brought online in 1969 under a contract let by the renamed Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) which initially connected four major computers at universities in the southwestern US (UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UCSB, and the University of Utah). The contract was carried out by BBN of Cambridge, MA under Bob Kahn and went online in December 1969. By June 1970, MIT, Harvard, BBN, and Systems Development Corp (SDC) in Santa Monica, Cal. were added. By January 1971, Stanford, MIT's Lincoln Labs, Carnegie-Mellon, and Case-Western Reserve U were added. In months to come, NASA/Ames, Mitre, Burroughs, RAND, and the U of Illinois plugged in. After that, there were far too many to keep listing here. Who was the first to use the Internet?

    Introduction
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. The Internet represents one of the most successful examples of the benefits of sustained investment and commitment to research and development of information infrastructure. Beginning with the early research in packet switching, the government, industry and academia have been partners in evolving and deploying this exciting new technology. Today, terms like "bleiner@computer.org" and "http://www.acm.org" trip lightly off the tongue of the random person on the street. This is intended to be a brief, necessarily cursory and incomplete history. Much material currently exists about the Internet, covering history, technology, and usage. A trip to almost any bookstore will find shelves of material written about the Internet.

Still less welcome is he who would make a Roman holiday of our misfortunes. Exaggeration of what was monstrous is quickly recognised as a sign of egotism, and that contrarious symptom of the same disease which pretends that what is accepted as monstrous was really little more than normal is equally unwelcome."

F irst of all, with millions of places available to visit on the World Wide Web these days, thank you very much for choosing to stop in and share with us. T he web site you are viewing now was created in response to suggestions by netizens that a place be created where long-time netizens could post short essays about how things were here on the net in the 'old days' long before the World Wide Web; long before the massive commercialization of the Internet which has now become so commonplace. We call this effort the Internet Historical Society , and members of the society are called Internet Pioneers. We like the net the way it used to be, long before spam, long before the massive and frequently offensive commercialization of the net began; when invasion of user privacy was unheard of.

"In the Beginning, ARPA created the ARPANET. And the ARPANET was without form and void. And darkness was upon the deep. And the spirit of ARPA moved upon the face of the network and ARPA said, 'Let there be a protocol,' and there was a protocol. And ARPA saw that it was good. And ARPA said, 'Let there be more protocols,' and it was so. And ARPA saw that it was good. And ARPA said, 'Let there be more networks,' and it was so." Danny Cohen
By 1992, when this timeline ends,
    • the Internet has one million hosts
    • the ARPANET has ceased to exist

    - Robert A. Heinlein If you're looking for a dry, formal history of the Internet, look elsewhere. The purpose of NetHistory is to give you a feeling for what it was like in the pioneering days of BITNET and the Internet. Hopefully, you will gain some perspective and come to understand the early Internet experience (although one could argue that the experience in question is a lot like sitting in front of a mainframe terminal in the middle of the night with a Twinkie-and-Jolt buzz). At worst, you should find it entertaining. In the Archive you'll find a growing collection of early network publications. Al Gore, Father of the Internet?
U.S. Vice President (and probable presidential candidate) Al Gore was interviewed on CNN by Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday 9 March 1999. According to an interpretation of that interview in Wired , Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet. Much outcry was immediately heard on many Internet mailing lists and elsewhere. Is this revisionist history or corrective history? Vint Cerf is usually credited as the single person most responsible for creation of the Internet. Have we had the wrong man all this time? Or maybe it's just campaign rhetoric, since the answer came in response to a question about how Mr. Gore differentiates himself from other likely Democratic presidential candidates. Let's look at what he actually said: ``During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.'' Let's come back to it in a moment.
