Getting a Web Education
By Tom Faust
The best way to learn about the Internet is by doing it. Fortunately, there are many web sites to teach you how to surf the Net. Of course, your first stop should be the good old Twin Cities Internet Guide and Directory (http://www.tcigd.com), but there are also other sites that do a great job of Web education.
General Guides
Most guides fall into this category. They contain an overview of the Internet, information on getting connected and sections on topics like search engines, browsers, e-mail, etc. On the surface, these sites look similar, but each has its own features.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (better known as the BBC) has put together an education site called WebWise (http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise). The four main sections are Net Basics, for the beginner; Net Know-How, for the intermediate user; Net Query, where experts answer questions each week; and Net Cetera with writing on issues such as the future of the Internet.
The Net Basics section contains good information segmented into specific areas and questions, such as "Common plug-ins," "Am I connected?" and "What does being 'online' actually mean?" This makes it easy to find what you're looking for.
Once novices have mastered the basics, they can visit Net Know-How. In addition to more advanced topics like building your own web page, it includes the "Diary of a Net Novice," as well as a two-part guide to Internet research, an examination of browsers and Internet guides for parents and young people.

Note: I agonized over whether to develop this bibliography simply because many of these books suffer from what anything technological suffer from - obsolescence. However, I still think it is worthwhile to record the sources I have used to learn about the Internet and Web authoring and to share my experiences with those interested. It is highly possible that many of these authors have dedicated themselves to keeping their books current so that newer editions may be available when you get to the point you want to learn more about these topics. Best things about textbooks, you can always go back and find a gem you missed in an earlier reading. Caveat: Do not take seriously the title's intent to have you learn anything in 24 hours, 1 week or any specific time period. For example, a "two week" book took me 3 months to get through. Time periods, however, are helpful in giving you a sense of how much detail the book would go into the topics it covers. For example, for the same topic, there is less depth in a 24-hour book than a 2 week book.

Introduction Only connect Why go online? This is not a recipe book This ... Why isn't the whole book online?
Only connect
‘Only connect,’ EM Forster famously wrote. Perhaps that should now be, ‘Only interconnect.’ Linking to the Internet is part of what being a writer is today – joining an invaluable communications network. ‘But is it invaluable? Isn’t it a waste of time?’ I hear you ask. I hope to answer that. Forster’s ‘only connect’ arose out of a supreme pre-occupation with human connection in its moral and social aspects. Like many authors today, he was deeply suspicious of the technology of connectivity while having an uncanny ability to predict exactly how it would develop. His short story ‘The Machine Stops’ essentially anticipates the Internet and his warnings about how his imagined world might affect relationships, communities and their interconnections are as fresh now as they were in 1909 when the story was first published. The world needs writers like Forster as seers and thinkers to help make sense of this extraordinary development in modern society. If writers interconnect, become a part of the Internet, they will not only benefit from its assets but also free the imagination to construct stories about its future.

here are thousands of buildings in this country, with millions of people in them who have no telephones, no cable television, and no reasonable prospect of broadband services. They're called schools," said Reed E. Hundt, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in a New York Times interview on December 6, 1993. Many students today are not getting the technological information in the classroom that they need to meet the demands of the future. To combat this problem, DOE's Office of Science Education and External Relations at ORNL has created the Oak Ridge Regional Education Center. The center offers year-round, hands-on learning and research opportunities for students and teachers from elementary school through college using the most up-to-date computer equipment. Several years ago, DOE named several national laboratories, including ORNL, as science education centers. The Oak Ridge Regional Education Center was built in January 1993. The center interacts with numerous regional groups, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Appalachia Education Laboratory. DOE is committed to using its highly trained technical staff and advanced facilities to strengthen science and mathematics education nationally. New partnerships are strengthening the center's focus on national education goals and on education reform within the Southeast. Support for these partnerships includes a major new focus on computing and communications technology for educational applications.

http://www.usaid.gov/regions/afr/leland/manual/manenglish/preface.htm
Preface Log onto the Internet! Gain unlimited access to information! Communicate with colleagues and funders in other countries without worrying about high phone charges and time differences! Showcase your products and services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week! Wait a minute.... True, the Internet can bring these benefits and more to your organization, but only if you use it to your advantage. Getting there can be confusing. You must decide whether you need new computers or telephone lines and how much these items will cost. You must ensure that your staff feel comfortable with the technology and make efficient use of their time in front of the computer. And with an array of Internet tools available to retrieve and disseminate information, you must understand which applications are most relevant and cost-effective for your organization. Equally as important as the technical aspects, you must be able to plan how your organization can take advantage of the Internet to achieve its goals. This manual, Making the Internet Connection Count, takes you, your organization, your work team, or any groups you intend to collaborate with through a process of examination and discovery. You will think about how you use information now, how you could use it in the future, and how you plan to introduce or expand the use of the Internet in your organization consistent with your organization's needs. Making the Internet Connection Count is intended for decision makers and staff of NGOs, educational institutions, and government agencies that currently do not have, or have very limited, access to the Internet. Chances are, if you are reading this book, you have decided that you want to introduce or expand the use of the Internet in your organization. You may be a senior manager who is giving this book to someone on your staff to make it happen. Or you may suddenly find yourself in a lead role as your organization's "Internet champion," getting your organization online.

http://www.rogerfrost.com/si.htm
Using the Internet to teach science
(TES 1994) It's massive and growing fast - the Internet - huge banks of information and strange new ways of communicating. As a case study of exponential growth this is a stunning one.
No, it's not time to down data loggers and your CD-Roms. It is time to wonder when or how - as yet another vision of the microchip age starts to take shape. The attraction grabber on the Internet is the `Web' where you can read, watch and interact with pages on the screen. You can go to a search page, type in `Wildlife' and find nearly a hundred pages. Or you can find a `home' or menu page and browse through other people's selections. You will easily find the `Nine Planets' pages - with not just legions of data and pictures about say, Saturn but about its moon Titan and so on. "It's like a book isn't it?" I said to Jo Quinton-Tulluck at the Science Museum. "It's not just A book" she answered, "it's more like a book you've chosen from all the libraries in the world." Silly question, because it's more than this: more like owning a pile of CD-Rom discs, with regular deliveries of today's sun spots, Kobe seismograph or news before it hits the TV. CD-Rom systems could even become redundant when they've built a `Superhighway' - a new Internet with much more bandwidth (information carrying ability). If that happens, you might interview scientists live, watch a nature reserve, access a you-wannit, you've-got-it world resource.
