INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN LAW TUTORIAL The study of International Law is concerned with the rules and norms that govern activities which occur outside or across the boundaries of nation-states. Therefore, "International Law" is different from " Foreign Law ", which deals with the study of the laws of another country, although you will often hear both terms used interchangeably. Traditionally, international law dealt with the relations between states and was frequently referred to as the “law of nations” or public international law. The law of nations is classified into three distinct groups: universal law, general law, and particular law. Universal law is the bundle of rights, duties, privileges, and immunities which are so fundamental to the existence of humans or nations that they vest in these groups without any affirming act being required. General law is the body of law derived from the conduct between states, but requires an affirmative action on the part of a state to be bound by it. Particular law is applicable to a single state because of the conduct and practices of that state. Only recognized governmental organizations can create international law. These generally fall into two categories: nation-states and intergovernmental (or supra-national) organizations. States generally use treaties to create international law. Although intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) do participate in the treaty-making process, they frequently use more direct legislative action to create international law.

    International law
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
International law deals with the relationships between states , or between persons or entities in different states. It sub-divides into "public international law", and " private international law ". When used without an adjective, "international law" generally refers to "public international law", and this article concentrates on that meaning. Traditionally, international law had states as its sole subjects . With the proliferation over the last century of international organizations , they have been recognized as its subjects as well. More recent developments in international human rights law international humanitarian law and international trade law (e.g. NAFTA Chapter 11 actions) have led to individuals and corporations being increasingly seen as subjects of international law as well, something which goes against the traditional legal orthodoxy. Since international law increasingly governs much more than merely relations between sovereign states, it may be better defined as law decided and enforced at the international, as opposed to national level.
