  • Bandaids and Blackboards
This is a site about growing up with medical problems...any ole type. Its goal is to help people understand what it's like, from the perspective of the children and teens who are doing just that. These kids have become experts at coping with problems that most of you have never heard of. They'd like you to know how they do it, and they hope that you'll be glad you came to visit one of the three areas (one for kids, one for teens, and one for adults).

It is designed to generate discussion based on the many misconceptions people have about disabilities. The target audience for this game is 5th grade through high school, although it can be successfully used with lower grades and adults.

Special Needs
The most important thing to remember with (most) special needs children is that they learn an objection/problem if it's shown to them in a way that they understand. Yes, it does take time and a strong will (on the parents part) to explore the many ways of showing a child something that he/she just cannot get. Children are learning DELAYED instead of learning DISABLED. There are no special requirements placed on the homeschooling child with special needs.

Special Education Internships
The International Partnership for Service-Learning, in affiliation with The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and its Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES), is pleased to offer cross-cultural programs in 10 nations, combining academic study for credit with internships in programs for individuals with disabilities. Most of these programs follow the same program design as the IPS-L undergraduate programs, which include academic study, living in a homestay with a local family or on a campus with international students, and serving 15-20 hours a week in established service agency. With the Special Eduation focus, your service will be in the form of an internship serving individuals with special needs, supervised by professionals; and your academic studies will focus on the culture in which you are living and the issues of children and adults with special needs. Internship opportunities include serving in schools, residential settings, clinics, sheltered workshops, and other programs for children and adults with a variety of special needs such as:

Schooling the Learning-Disabled
Child Abroad
Sally L. Smith
Reprinted from the Foreign Service Journal
December 1998
"The teachers are telling me he's lazy and won't try hard enough. They say we have spoiled him in America." "There was no way he could exist in any school in Burma so I had to home-school him." 'My hyperactive twins were kicked out of play group in Tanzania at age three for being 'too immature.'" 'My husband couldn't leave his station in Africa so I alone had to take my two children under three years of age to London for a week of testing."
- comments of American parents who have lived abroad with learning-disabled children
For parents of children with severe learning disabilities, dyslexia, problems with their own language and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), moving abroad causes great difficulties but can, at times, also bring unexpected gifts. Families have to assess what their child's strengths are as well as areas of weakness - usually well ahead of when they would need to acquire that knowledge in the States. Frequently they unite behind this child and find ways for him or her to succeed in some activities, be it in the arts, physical activities or in some area of the new culture. Diversity can be an attribute, not just a nuisance. Still, the tribulations of parents overseas should not be underestimated.
