Students with Special Needs
Edmonton Catholic Schools provides a variety of special education programming for students with special needs. This ensures the most enabling learning environment for the student. The model includes full inclusion, with support at the classroom/school level, specialized classes integrated in regular schools and out-of-district placements. Programming at the community school is considered as the first option. For more information on Special Needs Programs for children, please click here Special Education and Inclusive Education consultants within Learning Support Services (LSS) will continue to address the recommendations contained within the Review of Special Education by Alberta Learning , Edmonton Catholic Special Education Review and Mild/Moderate Review by Alberta Learning.
  • Continue to support inclusive education by increasing the Inclusive Education Consultants positions to include an Early Learning Inclusion Education position, thereby increasing the frequency and type of professional development delivered to school based staff in the areas of "best practices" for inclusion.

How are children affected by having a brother or sister with a disability? What support can be provided to siblings of students with disabilities? A short list of opportunities observed by parents and brothers and sisters could include: the insights a sibling will have on the human condition: the maturity many brothers or sisters develop; the pride brothers and sisters report in their sibling's abilities; the loyalty brothers and sisters display toward their siblings and families; and the appreciation many brothers and sisters have for their good health and own families. Below are suggestions for parents and service providers to minimize siblings' concerns and maximize their opportunities:
  • Provide brothers and sisters with age-appropriate information. Most brothers and sisters have a life-long, and ever-changing need for information. Parents and service providers have an obligation to proactively provide siblings with helpful information. Agencies representing specific disabilities and illnesses should be challenged to prepare materials specifically for young readers.
  • Provide siblings with opportunities to meet other siblings of children with special needs. For most parents, the thought of "going it alone," without the benefit of knowing another parent in a similar situation is unthinkable. Yet, this happens routinely to brothers and sisters. Sibshops and similar efforts offer siblings the same common-sense support that parents value. They let brothers and sisters know that they are not alone with their unique joys and concerns.

  • Strathclyde's Approach
More and more disabled students come to study at Strathclyde University every year, and we hope to welcome greater numbers in the future. We work hard to make our courses and campuses increasingly accessible - for all students, including students with a range of disabilities. In the academic year 1999 - 2000 there were 660 students who told us when they registered for their course that they had a disability. You can get a good idea of the importance the University places on creating a good environment for disabled students to live in and learn in from our Policy for Promoting Opportunities for Staff and Students with Disabilities The full document is available on request from the Special Needs Service or can be read on the web-site.

The forgotten children
Disabled children are at the centre of a movement to improve primary education in Asia which aims to see all children going to school by the year 2000. According to this World Bank Report, the development of inclusive primary education is the best option for achieving education for all in the Asian region where school enrolment rates are still lower than 70 per cent in some countries and where most disabled children receive no schooling at all. An estimated 130 million 'forgotten' children in developing countries, the majority girls, are without any kind of basic or primary education. This 1994 report, which is based on 15 country case studies, argues that universal primary education (UPE) cannot be achieved without the inclusion of children with special educational needs in the system, and that they can be successfully and much less expensively accommodated in integrated rather than fully segregated settings. Educational be nefits for all children may also be associated with quality improvements which are inherent in providing inclusive primary education, through major changes in the way schooling is planned, implemented and evaluated.

Speech and language is one of the more frequent special education services provided in our schools. It is the practice for the speech and language clinician to screen children for possible problems in speech and language that may interfere with a child's ability to communicate effectively with other children and his/her teachers. This screening will be done during the first two (2) or three (3) weeks of school. If it is found through the screening that a child needs the services of a speech and language clinician, parents will be notified by the school where the child attends.

Title Year Vol. No. Size CLASSROOM INTERVENTIONS: METHODS TO IMPROVE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR FOR STUDENTS WITH ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER KB Christopher Reiber and T.F.McLaughlin
Gonzaga University Behavior management techniques are essential components of any treatment method for students with ADHD. Further, they appear to be the only line of treatment to which school personnel have direct access. Research has suggested that nearly all educators employ some form of behavioral modification techniques in their classroom. This paper will explore a variety of classroom interventions to assist teachers to work successfully with children with ADHD. These include: classroom structure, teaching modifications, peer interventions, token economies and self-management. The interventions reviewed were presented on a continuum from the least basic modifications needed in the classroom to those in which more time and resources are involved. All the strategies reviewed were evidence based. Also included in the paper is an interview of a general education instructor and an review of the strategies he employs in his classroom....
