PRIME RECENT and PROPOSED ATTACKS on CIVIL RIGHTS in the UNITED KINGDOM
The first two attacks on civil rights in the UK were created by the previous Conservative administration; but the first attack is so central and important, because of its attack on the right to silence, that it is being included in the list below; whilst the second attack, which could have been blocked by the incoming Labour government of 1997, was confirmed by them. RIGHTS ATTACKED: right to silence rights to peaceful protest rights to peaceful assembly freedom of movement Legislation: Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1994/Ukpga_19940033_en_4.htm#mdiv34 summary offence not to leave, punishable by up to three months in prison, though it is a defence to show that you had a reasonable excuse not to leave. The chief constable of the force involved approves the decisions, and is allowed to make such authorisations if he believes it will help fight serious crime. Such actions can be taken without the owner/occupier of the property being under suspicion of a crime. The main safeguard is the oversight of the legislation by a group of commissioners who handle complaints, but the decisions are taken without requiring a warrant. (Sections 91 to 108)

http://www.civilrightsmuseum.org/freedom/sponsor.asp
The Freedom Award is an annual event for the National Civil Rights Museum. It is the Museum's largest fundraiser. Held each year in the fall, the Freedom Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cause of Freedom. With a few exceptions, the Museum presents two awards each year (on rare occasions when determined by the board and staff, only one award is presented). An International Freedom Award is given to an individual whose work has had global impact or has impacted the state of human and civil rights abroad. A National Freedom Award is presented to someone who has influenced the state of civil and human rights within the United States. The National Award is sponsored by International Paper Company (IP) . Through the years, IP has been an avid supporter of the National Civil Rights Museum, financially supporting many of the Museum's programs, projects and events. In the case of the Freedom Award, IP underwrites the $25,000 honorarium presented to the national honoree. The company also sponsors and underwrites the cost of the Freedom Award Public Forum and in past years, when held, the Freedom Award Children's poster contest. The Hyde Family Foundations sponsors the National Civil Rights Museum's International Freedom Award by underwriting the $50,000 honorarium presented to the international honoree. The Hyde Family Foundations is also an ardent supporter of the Museum. The financial support of the Hyde Family Foundations has supported Museum operations and projects including the acquisition of the rooming house across from the Museum where James Earl Ray allegedly fired the fatal shot which killed Dr. King. With the support of the Hyde Family Foundations and funds from other corporate contributors, this added facility will house much of the evidence from the King trial and the artifacts that document the continuation of the Movement following his assassination.
