Woolworth's Museum to Honor Rosa Parks
Thursday, January 26, 1995
By LORRAINE AHEARN, Staff Writer The woman whose dignity sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott - and the modern civil rights movement - will be honored next week in Greensboro by the organizers of the Woolworth's museum. Rosa Parks, the 81-year-old woman who became the mother of the civil rights movement by refusing to step to the back of the bus, will attend Wednesday morning's memorial at the Elm Street lunch counter. She will also be the first recipient of the new Alston-Jones International Civil and Human Rights Award at a banquet Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The banquet, sponsored by the Sit-In Movement Inc., is to raise money for the International Civil Rights Museum planned at the site of the historic 1960 Woolworth's sit-in. Parks, today a Detroit resident, will be here Tuesday to promote her new book Quiet Strength.
The guest speaker at Wednesday's banquet at Koury Convention Center will be Benjamin Hooks, former NAACP director. Other award recipients will be the first four sit-in participants and some of those who worked behind the scenes: J. Kenneth Lee, Dr. George Simkins, Ralph Johns and Ezzell Blair Sr.

The United Nations is stepping out in support of gay rights. In late August the U.N.'s human rights committee ruled that Australia violated international civil rights law when it denied Edward Young a pension payout after the death of his partner of 38 years, World War II veteran Larry Cains. "Globally, it is the most significant statement that a U.N. body has ever made about the equality rights of same-sex couples," Australian National University law professor Wayne Morgan told The Age. To protect its human rights reputation, the Australian government, which has 90 days to respond, is now under pressure to rewrite its tax, social security, and armed services laws to include same-sex partners, he said. While such rulings are nonbinding, the 101 other nations that have ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights could face similar pressure to provide equal benefits. The United States has signed the covenant but not ratified it, so it is not bound by its requirements.

    civil rights: an overview
A civil right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if interfered with by another gives rise to an action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, assembly, the right to vote, freedom from involuntary servitude, and the right to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of an individual are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a particular group or class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent discrimination based on a persons race, sex, religion, age, previous condition of servitude, physical limitation, national origin and in some instances sexual preference. The most important expansion of civil rights in the United States was the enactment of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery throughout the United States. See U.S. Const. amend. XIII.
