OPB National Teacher Training Institute 2003
The National Teacher Training Institute (NTTI) is the centerpiece of a year-long professional development program which arms teachers with the skills they need to effectively incorporate technology into their teaching. NTTI begins with the selection of master teachers to participate in intensive teacher training designed for K-12 educators in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Master teachers culminate their training by sharing their learning experiences with colleagues at yearly Institutes held in participating Education Service Districts. The Institutes follow standards from such institutions as the U.S. Department of Education, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Center for History in the Schools, demonstrating a variety of technology-based, hands-on learning experiences. The training includes several modeled lessons that cover how to enhance an interdisciplinary lesson by using instructional videos and the Internet in classroom instruction, as well as how to design media-rich lessons. Participants learn to use OPB's Video On Demand Service, Instructional Television (ITV) and prime-time PBS programs to explain, motivate, reinforce and reach the different learning styles of students as they familiarize themselves with new curriculum concepts.

Lesson Plans from Philip Livingston Magnet Academy in Albany, New York, US How does a 7th grade English teacher integrate her curriculum with the science teacher's, meet state education standards and allow the students to have fun while they are learning? At Philip Livingston Magnet Academy, Ms. Mary Paley, English teacher; Ms. Kamila Smith, Pre-service teacher; Ms. Kara Ford, Science teacher; and Mr. Neil Shapiro, Media Specialist joined forces to encourage students to learn about nature in a virtual environment. The goal was to create an integrated curriculum that sought links among the humanities, communication arts, natural science and art. The educators developed lessons that included cross-curricular activities and assessments. In this interdisciplinary project, the 7th grade science content provides a factual framework for the creative and persuasive writing tasks that follow. These lessons merge the Science and English Language Arts curricula and allow the students to see the common thread that binds all academic disciplines together.

    Lessons from the Library
April is School Library Media Month, a great time to reexamine your students' library know-how! Do your students know diddly about Dewey? Do they believe that "biography" is a television show? Do they think call numbers belong in a telephone's memory? Are your students convinced that a "librarian" is a person born under the sign of Libra? If so, it's time to reel them in and get them reacquainted with reading, researching, and the library! Included: Five fun lessons to reinforce library skills! During your April observance of School Library Media Month, celebrate with lessons that encourage your students to rediscover the wealth of knowledge found in your school's library! Library skills can often get lost among the rigors of any curriculum, but these are the skills needed to complete tasks adults face every day finding information, summing it up, internalizing it, and sharing it. This month, schedule a visit to the library in person or online to sharpen your students' research skills!
