Intellectual property law cannot be patched, retrofitted, or expanded to contain digitized expression any more than real estate law might be revised to cover the allocation of broadcasting spectrum (which, in fact, rather resembles what is being attempted here). We will need to develop an entirely new set of methods as befits this entirely new set of circumstances. Most of the people who actually create soft property - the programmers, hackers, and Net surfers - already know this. Unfortunately, neither the companies they work for nor the lawyers these companies hire have enough direct experience with nonmaterial goods to understand why they are so problematic. They are proceeding as though the old laws can somehow be made to work, either by grotesque expansion or by force. They are wrong.

The Intellectual Property Law Association (IPLA) is a student organization who's purpose is to provide a forum where likeminded students can come together to discuss and learn about intellectual property law. We are currently the largest student organization at the law school, boasting well over sixty members for the 2001-2002 school year. To achieve our mission, we plan various activities on campus such as practitioner panels, informational meetings, faculty lectures, and social events. This past semester has been very successful, and we look forward to many more events in the future. We work in close conjunction with the faculty and administration to support the growth of the intellectual property program as a whole at the law school. IPLA also produces and distributes the Intellectual Property Law Bulletin , one of the premier student intellectual property publications in the country.
