compiled by Virginia Seale Last updated: June 13, 2002 Technology is not new. It has been incorporated throughout history as men and women worked to solve problems using available tools. In the early days of mankind, technology was used to move rocks; today we move ideas and information, as well as rocks and rockets. The following collection of activities and Web sites is intended to take some of the mystery out of technology and show how technology is interesting, diverse, fun, and absolutely relevant to our lives. Select a project for each day of the school year, or work through the collection at your own pace. Some of these ideas broaden the knowledge of teachers and some can be used with students. Some suggested Internet sites link to wonderful resources for classroom use. Finding the best way to integrate technology for students will take time, exploration, and experimentation on the part of teachers. Enjoy the adventure.
  • Teachers should spend some time contemplating the future and thinking about how to prepare students for the world of tomorrow. Abstract Introducing technology into the curriculum means more than just “making it work.” The principles of adult learning theory can be used in the design of technology-based instruction to make it more effective. Malcolm Knowles’ theory of andragogy allows teacher/facilitators to structure lessons which are part of a relevant learning environment for adults students.
Introduction What is Andragogy? Andragogy is a set of assumptions about how adults learn. Its roots can be traced back to Alexander Kapp, a German grammar teacher who used it to describe Plato’s educational theory (Knowles, Holton, and Swanson 1998, 59). It appeared again in 1921 when another German, Social Scientist, Eugen Rosenstock claimed that “adult education required special teachers, special methods, and a special philosophy.” (Knowles, Holton, and Swanson 1998, 59) There is evidence that discussion of andragogy continued in Europe until Dusan Savicevic, a Yugoslavian adult educator, first discussed the concept in the United States. Malcolm Knowles heard about the term and in 1968 used it in an article in Adult Leadership . From that point on, Knowles has become known as the principle expert on andragogy although numerous adult educators including Brookfield (1986), Mezirow (1991), Lawler (1991) and Merriam (1999) have addressed the concept and/or discussed how it can be used to facilitate adult learning.

Imagine this scenario. You have just been hired by a principal to teach in a school. The school has a new lab of computers plus one computer in each class, all capable of accessing the Internet. Your new principal expects you to integrate technology into the curriculum. You feel you are fairly average in your knowledge about computers and feel somewhat anxious about the expectation to integrate technology. Where do you start? What does the integration of technology exactly mean? Your principal guides you to a web site on the Internet that is devoted to helping teachers understand how to integrate technology. You eagerly settle in to explore this site. What does the integration of technology into the curriculum look like?Is it being able to create a spreadsheet that calculates student marks? How about typing a handout and printing it out for students? Is it having students line up at a computer to complete several levels of a drill and practice software program? My answer is a firm NO! Technology is a wonderful tool that can be used to assist teachers and students in the classroom. In fact, teachers should be encouraged to use technology to assist them in their role as teacher. This is an important step towards integrating technology into the curriculum. However the true integration of technology goes far beyond the role of assistant.Technology is changing at a rapid pace and causing more and more confusion on how to use it in an effective, integrated manner in schools. It seems that there has been a focus on the physical machine when it comes to teaching with computers. In fact, the teaching

From Integration to Actualization BELINDA GIMBERT AND CARLA ZEMBAL-SAUL
The Pennsylvania State University BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In their review of literature on information technology and teacher education, Willis and Mehlinger (1996) asserted, “Most preservice teachers know very little about effective use of technology in education and leaders believe there is a pressing need to substantially increase the amount and quality of instruction teachers receive about technology” (p. 978). This is not surprising given that the United States Office of Technology Assessment (U.S. Congress, 1995) report found that technology was not a central component of teacher preparation programs in most colleges of education. A summary of the key findings states, “Most technology instruction in colleges of education is teaching about technology as a separate subject, not teaching with technology across the curriculum. Seldom are students asked to create lessons using technologies or practice teaching with technological tools” (p. 165). Clearly there is a need to integrate technology into teacher preparation. PROGRAM CONTEXT Penn State elementary education majors in their final year of preparation are selected to complete the yearlong internship program through an extensive application and interview process in which mentor teachers play a major role. Interns agree to begin the experience during the second week in August with an intensive two-week, campus-based preparation experience, termed “Jump Start.” Interns then join their mentors for orientation, classroom preparation for the school year, and district meetings. At this point, interns abandon the university calendar to teach alongside their mentors.

Integrating Technology into the Art Curriculum
Fall 1996 Introduction It was still snowing at 1:26 PM on Friday, February 16, 1996, in Maryland when John Royo posted the following message on the NAEA-EMIG (National Art Education Association - Electronic Media Interest Group) listserv: Hi everyone, To those of you in the mid-atlantic, U.S., happy snow ;) A question for all to ponder. As we merge more and more into the Digital Age, are "traditional materials" chalks, oils, etc, still relevant to teach with? Why, once into the digital age, would we want to use clay, paint, etc that is analog and not digital with any art student except the BFA/MFA track, or them at all. Are these traditional materials essential to learning about art? Or are they a source of hazardous materials? Assume that you could put economics and art budgets aside, and everyone could be doing digital, why would we continue to use the "traditional" materials. Mind you, this is a devil's advocate type of question.....

Louisiana Cinquains Kids Powerpoint Presentation Background The long term goal of the Vermilion Parish Technology Plan is to furnish every student and staff with the necessary tools, skills, and resources needed to function effectively in our technological world. Thus, we are striving to provide modern technology, professional development and technological support for every classroom. Most of our goals, strategies, and plans are based on the national goals of technology in the classroom:
Alignment to Technology Plan The technology plan has always closely followed the goals and objectives of the national and state goals for technology. Over the years the technology plan has provided:
Rational All of these programs have provided the teachers, staff, and students the tools and professional development needed to integrate technology into the curriculum. However, integrating technology into the curriculum is not easy and takes a lot of work. Research has shown that the integration of technology into the curriculum has only improved student achievement when that integration was at the highest levels of integration. Just using technology in the classroom does not automatically mean that it is integrated with the curriculum. Just using Accelerated Reader, Plato, Cornerstone, etc. are not examples of true technology integration. The focus should be on students using technology to enhance their learning as part of the curriculum.

In learning to teach, most often we start with modeling the way we were taught and using models of instruction developed by experts similar to teaching manuals, workbooks, and lab manuals. When we ask faculty and students to integrate technology into instruction, we are asking them to do something that they themselves have never experienced. The underlying premise in our first technology grant, EXCITE , was that WSU faculty members would have to know and understand how technology works and can work for students. By modeling appropriate use of technology in their classrooms students would see how technology might be used. If students experienced the use of technology in classrooms, they would feel comfortable using it themselves and in classrooms when they teach.
The first “M” in Project M3 is “ Models ” which includes WSU faculty and practicing teachers modeling the effective use of technology and integrated teams of curriculum and technology students and specialists developing technology integration projects for students ( TIPS ) or models of practice. An outgrowth of the TIPS model is the Handheld Educators Leadership Program (

    What is technology integration?
Definition : The act of carefully planning the use of technology as a tool in the delivery of lessons in order to enhance and increase the students’ abilities to understand, manipulate, and learn subject area content. The key is to make it part of the lesson and not something merely added on top of it. Description : Teachers move through various stages in this process.
  • Technology becomes a regular part of the classroom via projects, essays, research Daily active learning; higher level use of multimedia tech tools Teacher exhibits confidence in finding and using alternative ways of teaching and using technology
  • Throughout this process, the teacher moves from director of instruction to facilitator.
How does technology integration impact the teacher's time?
It takes a lot of time in the beginning stages and each time you incorporate some new piece of technology. It can be very frustrating. You have to learn the technology and manage the content at the same time. However, once you get it going, that’s when you realize the payoff. Things become easier, tasks are accomplished faster and more efficiently, and students learn more. So it’s definitely worth the effort.

    CHANGING TEACHER EDUCATION
Within the teacher education community, efforts are being made to overcome these obstacles. These efforts appear to fall into two major categories: (1) strengthening the capacity of SCDEs to prepare teachers to use instructional technology and (2) developing models and materials. One example from the first category are the new unit standards (effective fall 1995) developed by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), will affect the 475 SCDEs accredited by NCATE. These standards reflect recommendations from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and include guidelines that address content and pedagogical studies for initial teacher preparation, faculty qualifications, resources for teaching and scholarship, and facilities for operating the SCDE (Thomas, 1994).
