Topics will be studied in a comprehensive fashion and not as they relate specifically to the traditional fields of science and math. Principles from the traditional branches of science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) will be studied to allow a thorough and exhaustive study of a particular topic. The underlying mathematical principles required for a complete understanding will be examined throughout the process. Several scientific topics will be studied during the semester. These may include, but are not limited to, reaction rates, gases, acid/base theory, fluid dynamics, electricity, neurophysiology, cardiophysiology, population demography, and population genetics. Mathematical principles from areas such as Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, numerical functions, statistics, and calculus will be examined when they apply.

INTEGRATED MATH AND SCIENCE Fellow : Jessica Yellin
    Teacher : Joe Hardy
    Undergraduate Fellow : Lisa Behmer
School : Whitman Middle School PROJECT DESCRIPTION I am working with Joe Hardy at Marcus Whitman Middle School, with his 7th and 8th grade MESA math classes. I am also working with Lisa Behmer, a senior in mathematics who is one of the PRIME undergraduate fellows. For the first few weeks in the classroom Lisa and I mostly observed how the kids were learning in the classroom, and helped them when they were working in small groups on homework and projects. I feel that this time was really valuable in developing a good working relationship between the three of us. It also was a great opportunity to get to know the kids and allow them the opportunity to get to know us. Right now, I really feel like I am part of a strong, supportive team, and that we are all very enthusiastic about working together to enrich this math class for our kids. The focus of my project is to try to make math more real for the students by developing projects that require them to use conceptual understanding of the math they are learning to solve real-world type problems. In October, with Joe's help, Lisa and I developed a 3 week long bicycle engineering project for the kids. The project casts the students as employees of a mechanical engineering research and development company which has received a contract to design the gearing for an upcoming international bicycle race. A friend of Lisa's who owns Alki Bike and Board generously loaned us new bikes and training stands for the kids to use during the experiments. These brand new, very cool bikes really helped get the kids excited about this project.

Kent School District students in Integrated Mathematics I will be able to apply algebraic topics such as linear equations and graphs, systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations and graphs to solve a variety of problems. They will also apply geometric topics such as transformations, similarity, area, solid geometry, trigonometric ratios, and inductive reasoning to investigate patterns and create mathematical models for real-world situations. Students will also be able to analyze the results of experimental, theoretical, and geometric probability and statistical measures and graphs to draw logical conclusions. Technology will be used regularly by students to confirm work to implement experimentation, and to assist in interpreting results.
    MATHEMATICS DISTRICT-WIDE GOALS
1.0 Kent School District students in mathematics will analyze and interpret mathematical relationships through reasoning and problem solving.
2.0 Kent School District students in mathematics will use patterns and relationships to develop an appreciation for the value of mathematical systems.
