It is like painting with wood One of the many definitions is as follows: in-tar-sia: a mosaic of wood fitted and glued into a wooden support popular in 15th century Italy for decoration also : t he art or process of making such work. Its' rebirth is a direct result of Judy and Jerrys efforts to keep this technique alive.
The publication of Roberts' work in a national woodworking magazine brought Judy and Jerry widespread attention in 1988 The demand for her designs gradually prompted her to refocus on the drawing board, a move that, with the help of Jerry, produced an intarsia video and three instructional books. In less than a decade, her name has become synonymous with intarsia.
In 1997 Judy was one of the first ten woodworkers to be inducted in the "Woodworking Hall of Fame"

Intarsia 101 Introduction
Intarsia is a great craft / art form that can be enjoyed on various levels as a source of extra income, creating wonderful one of a kind works of art or as a hobby providing endless hours of personal enjoyment making gifts for family and friends. Intarsia is basically a combination of just a few woodworking skills and is not as difficult as one might think. One of the nicest things about Intarsia is that you don't need a lot of fancy tools or a large workshop. I met a couple of Intarsia hobbyists in Vancouver, BC who were having a ball doing Intarsia in a spare bedroom of their apartment. You can create an Intarsia project with nothing more than a fretsaw and sand paper. It would be slow work but it could be done. Power tools do make the process a lot quicker. I suggest that all new Intarsia enthusiasts explore these resources: Intarsia Books Intarsia Courses Local Intarsia Community

Favorite Links Welcome to the World of Barnwood Intarsia,
by P.A. Barney I hope you will enjoy these projects as much as I did the first time I built each one. Let me give you some peace of mind right from the start . . . "you are not building a piano" . Just build and shape each piece to be visually pleasing to yourself. The more Intarsia projects you do, the more realistic your work will begin to look. Following are some of my best tips for creating a unique piece of wood art, that you will get a lot of satisfaction from. Use something to create a template from the original pattern. I have found that .010 acetate works well and is an inexpensive way to produce a template. Cut out the template with an exacto knife. (If you miss a cut by a little bit don't tell anyone, they won't know.) You can purchase acetate from a blueprint or art supply store. Sanford's sharpie fine or ultra fine works best for tracing on acetate. When tracing your template onto wood, use a fine line ball-point pen. I prefer to use western red cedar, aromatic cedar and white pine, because they are soft to work with. They also allow for a good contrast in color selection. Barnwood intarsia can be shaped to look more like a carving than a flat wall hanging. That's why I start all my work at an inch and a half thick. This allows you to put as much dimension, to your piece, as your taste and patience desires.

Intarsia by Vickie and Bill
Welcome to out Intarsia Web Page.We have been creating intarsia for 15 years. Intarsia, is the ancient art of making pictorial mosaics by laying precious and exotic material into or onto a groundwork of solid wood-inspired both inlay and marquetry The intarsia pictures that we create are done with a variety of natural wood selections, western red cedar, pine, aspen and other hardwoods. All pieces are individually cut to fit together with the next piece. The pieces are contured by sanding to give them final shape. The finished picture is given 3 coats of polyurathane These beautiful pieces of art are the perfect gift item for that hard to buy person on your list, or a unique accent piece for your home or office. If you would be interest in purchasing any of the items please contact me at vicwatts@bellsouth.net or call 318/949-1073 for more information. Please remember that I don't maintain an inventory of finished pieces for sale. The completed projects that you see are only intended to give you an idea of what your finished piece will look. Your piece isn't made until you place the order. The highly sculptured and contured intarsia takes time and care. I prefer to devote the time and energy to the piece that you request rather than simply generating cookie-cutter sales stock. Since each piece of art work is handmade, please allow four to six weeks for delivery.

Intarsia Woodworking Patterns
are a great way to turn your scrap timber into exclusive artwork that will amaze your friends.
Or at least that's what it says on the cover of my first book
So it must be true
Intarsia only needs very small quantities of timber and a few basic and fairly cheap tools . But this technique does allow even the inexperienced "intarsiaphile?" to make some good stuff. "I made a fox and even some of the grandchildren were impressed. Not for the excellent work but that a grandma made it."
Edie (West Australia) But I could never produce beautiful work like this.
If I had a quid for every time that I had heard that I could buy enough beer to last at least a couple of days.
Like everything, a really complicated intarsia is, well, complicated, and needs lots of work.
Simple patterns are a lot, what's the word I'm looking for, simpler. After trying your free pattern, (Dolphin) I have definitely been bitten by the Intarsia bug. .... but your enthusiasm must be catching, because it has reawakened my flagging interest, and I'm dying to try another pattern.

Intarsia Woodworking
by
Kay I. Hanneman
Intarsia is an art of wood inlay. I use various types and colors of woods to give the pictures their color and work with the grains for textures and design. (There are no stains used in the pictures you see.) The woods are selected and then cut into pieces much like a puzzle. Then they are sanded to shape to give the pictures a 3-D effect. Some of these have taken many hours of time to complete, but well worth the outcome. I have been doing Intarsia for 6 years now, and each piece is new and exciting to me as it takes shape in my hands. There are no two exactly alike! Although at this time I do not take orders, I do hope you enjoy viewing what I have done. If you have any questions or comments you may contact me via e-mail at Hanneman@WCTC.Net . I do not take orders at the present time though. Following is a collection of some of my intarsia woodworking done from 1991 to present. Too see a larger picture click on any of the following images.
