Its creator describes it as "a good way to introduce students to the nuances of playwriting and how the actors express what the characters are like. It is best used at the point of writing dialogue and stage/acting directions in the playwriting process. This is also a good way to introduce the students to each other at the beginning of a semester, or as part of the community building process, or as a way to further tighten the community sense throughout the semester and to encourage cooperative behavior."

Usually, individual teachers will tackle the process of plugging the gaps in their curriculum when an issue or opportunity arises. A sixth grade teacher may see the need to review note taking, while a high school teacher needs to re-introduce Boolean operators and review Citing Sources. Anastasia Niehof Information Literacy Final Project September 30, 2002 Notes on this lesson plan Existing need that prompted this lesson: I was disappointed that the text did not give more thought to the potential of applying information literacy ideals to the public library setting. The main section that did was a history which seemed to imply that finally public libraries are doing what they should by “answering patrons’ questions and finding resources … [not] conducting formal programs of library instruction” (Pickering Thomas 15). I think that it would be possible and beneficial for all involved if a teacher were to contact the local library and arrange to do a collaborative lesson with the librarian such as the one I’ve created here. I wanted to show how public libraries can contribute to information literacy through sharing the bibliographic and reference knowledge they have, especially about their own particular library. Target audience: This lesson could be used by teachers and/or librarians working with junior high or early high school students in a school media center or public library. It could be modified for use on an individual basis, such as if a student came into a library with a similar assignment and the librarian had opportunity to show the student a shortened or modified version of this exercise.

Lessons and activities that have primarily reading outcomes can be found in the Literacy Activities and Lessons section. Lessons that also support MCPS curricular units in other content areas con be found in the section. In addition, some teachers wrote descriptions of what their classrooms look like during these lessons. The Windows into Classrooms section will give you a glimpse into classrooms and allow you to read about such lessons in action.
