Infertility Infertility is the inability to reproduce. It affects 6.1 million American women and their partners, about 10% of the population of reproductive age. Infertility affects men and women at equal rates. There are many causes of infertility, and 25 percent of infertile couples have multiple contributing factors. The causes of infertility may include androgen-related disorders, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Infertility can be linked to abnormal ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary) or abnormal development or shape of the uterus. Symptoms Many women who are infertile may exhibit no symptoms. Symptoms that do present in others may include:
  • Irregular ovulation and abnormal menstrual periods Pelvic pain
Diagnosis Before you are treated for infertility, you and your partner must be evaluated by a doctor. Several testing procedures may be performed to identify the cause or causes of infertility. Possible procedures include:
  • Blood tests Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Laparoscopy Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans Medical history Physical examination Semen analysis Ultrasound
Treatments Normal fertility requires that the ovary release an egg or ovum, which can be fertilized by the male sperm. After fertilization, the developing embryo must enter the uterus where the endometrium is appropriately developed to allow for the pregnancy to continue. Women with PCOS, endometriosis and other reproductive disorders can often become pregnant, in some cases naturally and in other cases with the help of medications or assisted reproductive technologies. For some, surgery can improve the chance of natural conception. For others, infertility therapies, such as ovulation induction or in vitro fertilization, may be more effective.

Media Releases UTS Experts Report reveals a rising tide of racism Ethnic and Indigenous communities are turning inward in response to a rising tidemark of harassment and abuse according to a new report on racism in Australia. The study, undertaken by UTS Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences researchers Julie Browning and Professor Andrew Jakubowicz, is based on detailed reports and interviews with a range of Indigenous and ethnic community organisations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. "Barriers between communities seem to be intensifying," Professor Jakubowicz said. "There is a widespread sense that the general level of racism is on average higher. It also appears that 'waves' of racism are moving through society, affecting groups in similar ways but at different times. "In the wake of international and local events, most prominently the September 11 attacks in New York, incidents appear to have increased in which people are harassed, discriminated against and attacked on the basis of their difference of appearance, religion, and culture. People were most likely to be targeted in public places such as shopping centres, at work, in schools and sometimes when accessing a government service." Professor Jakubowicz said that even though the report covered only a limited number of communities, it was able to identify 169 incidents of vilification or discrimination in a three month period at the end of 2003, 82 of which included abuse or harassment in public places and many of which happened in schools. Most incidents were not reported to authorities - often because they happened quickly or people feared retribution.

    Understanding Male Infertility
    By Marc Goldstein, M.D., FACS
Infertility effects one in every six couples who are trying to conceive. In at least half of all cases of infertility a male factor is a major or contributing cause. This means that about 10% of all men in the United States who are attempting to conceive suffer from infertility.
Historically, infertility has been considered a women's disease. It is only within the last fifty years that the importance of the male factor contribution to infertility has been recognized. The mistaken notion that infertility is associated with impotence or decreased masculinity may contribute to this fear. The good news is that the rapid research advances in the area of male reproduction have brought about dramatic changes in the ability to both diagnose and treat male infertility. The majority of couples suffering from infertility can now be helped to conceive a child on their own.
The most common identifiable cause of infertility in men is varicocele. This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum that causes abnormalities in the temperature regulation of the testis. Enzymes that are responsible for both sperm and hormone (testosterone) production have an optimal temperature at which they operate most effectively. If this temperature is elevated by even one degree, sperm and testosterone production are adversely effected.
