Using mind/body medicine to treat infertility
by Karen Asp It may be useful for women undergoing traditional infertility treatment to add mind/body techniques to their lifestyle. Infertility affects 6.1 million Americans, or 10% of the reproductive age population, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Many women with infertility turn to modern medicine to increase their chances of conceiving. Yet medical treatments may be only part of the solution. Some people believe that adding mind/body techniques to the treatment plan may help women heal mentally and emotionally, thus opening their bodies' pathways to conception.

At Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology provides a full line of services for women from menstruation through menopause. As home to The Infertility and Reproductive Medicine Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the division is best known for its work with couples facing infertility. Each year, more than 2,000 couples are evaluated and treated for infertility at Washington University School of Medicine. The university treats couples like Mary and John who, after six years, a battery of tests and numerous infertility treatments - including two rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) welcomed son, Sam, into their family. The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility offers a full line of leading-edge medical services to both diagnose and treat the causes of infertility. Both medical and surgical therapies are offered to treat the causes of infertility. The latest fertility drug therapies (both oral and injectable medications) are utilized in ovulation induction and with intrauterine insemination (a form of artificial insemination.) Washington University reproductive endocrinologists are specialists in the use of sonohysterography, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy to diagnose infertility.

Welcome to the Yale Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Web site which is part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University School of Medicine. The excellence of Yale OB/Gyn is deep rooted, the history of our faculty is very rich in tradition and scientific breakthroughs.
In the 1950's our department created the first Newborn Special Care Unit in the world. Ever since we have been on the cutting edge of perinatal care by developing intrauterine corrective surgery for unborn babies and by inventing the key method of electronic fetal monitoring during childbirth. This is now used in every hospital around the world. With respect to reproductive endocrinology, our section had the first IVF Program and had the first IVF pregnancy in the Northeast.
Our staff physician's achievements are recognized world wide for both their academic and clinical activities. They are also recognized by various professional societies. One example is: in year 2000 at the annual meeting of the most prestigious society of our field, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation approximately 1000 presentations were accepted, and a Presidential Prize was awarded to the 25 best. Our Section of Reproductive Medicine has received four of these awards. You, as a patient, may not immediately benefit from our scientific breakthroughs, but the awareness and worldwide leadership of our faculty assures that you will receive the best and most forward looking care humanly possible.

The Yale Sperm Physiology Laboratory, established in 1983, is a leading Andrology laboratory, with national and international reputations for the excellence of both its clinical and its innovative research programs. We specialize in clinical evaluation and treatment of couples with male factor infertility, and in research aimed at developing new approaches for such evaluation and treatment. Our laboratory performs the most sophisticated computer assisted semen analyses, anti-sperm antibody testing, and sperm morphometry/morphology evaluations. In addition, it offers the sperm migration test, which provides an assessment of the progression efficiency of sperm available for fertilization, and tests the maintenance of sperm motility. Another feature, a result of award winning research, provides a measure of sperm fertility based on the measurement of a sperm protein which is present only in fertile sperm. This test is useful in the diagnosis of unexplained male infertility, a condition in which fertility is diminished despite normal sperm concentrations and motilities.

Alternative Medicine: Exploring Your Treatment Options How to Have a Baby: Overcoming Infertility

There is no doubt that modern medicine inspires awe. IVF laboratories and sophisticated ultrasound scanning machines appear very impressive and reassuring when you are infertile. However, paradoxically, even though the effectiveness of reproductive technology has improved dramatically, more infertile patients than ever before have become dissatisfied with their medical care today. This situation has resulted in a move towards 'alternative' medicine, which has become increasingly popular all over the world. Even in the United States of America (the bastion of high-tech scientific medicine), more than 20% of infertile couples have consulted an alternative medicine practitioner, mainly because they were unhappy with modern medical care. There are many reasons for this unhappiness with modern medicine. Patients increasingly feel that medicine has become too commercial and that doctors are too busy to spend time with them. They are unhappy with the impersonal nature of modern medicine, especially when the doctor spends more time looking at their lab reports and ultrasound scans rather than with them. While it is true that patients need technology, they also need tender, loving care; after all, doctors need to look after not only their medical problems, but also their emotional needs!
