Acupuncture for Infertility: Acupuncture Increases the Success of In-Vitro Fertilization
By Lynda Harvey, OMD, LAc
Brian B. Carter, MSci, LAc
Brian is an author of international renown and public speaker. He is currently writing his book Chinese Medicine: A Practical Guide to Optimal Healing. Brian practices acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in sunny San Diego, California. Editor's note, 9/1/03: A year ago, we were receiving only 9,500 unique visitors per month, compared to our current nearly 30,000 per month. Here an excerpt from the article from August 2002 that since then, of that month's articles, has received the most attention and acclaim. Infertility can be devastating, and it's frustrating that there have been limited treatment options. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is costly, uncomfortable and doesn't always work. Those who've already tried it four or five times understand!

Infertility
Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine by Belinda Rowland
Definition
Infertility is the failure of a couple to conceive a pregnancy after trying to do so for at least one full year. In primary infertility, pregnancy has never occurred. In secondary infertility, one or both members of the couple have previously conceived, but are unable to conceive again after a full year of trying.
Description
Approximately 20% of couples struggle with infertility at any given time. Infertility has increased as a problem over the last 30 years. Some studies blame this increase on social phenomena, including the tendency for marriage and starting a family to occur at a later age. For women, fertility decreases with increasing age:
  • Infertility in married women ages 16-20=4.5%.

Infertility Causes If there is a disturbance in any of these factors, infertility may result.
Infertility in Men
  • One of the causes is being unable to producing good quality semen. The semen may have:
    • Low sperm count
    • Abnormal sperms
    • Poor motility
    This may be due to:
    • Undescended testes
    • Obesity
    • Poor diet
    • Sedentary or stressful life
    • Over tight underwear
    • Prolonged abstinence from intercourse
  • Infertility may be due to problems pertaining to the sexual act:
    • Impotence
    • Retrograde ejaculation
  • It may be due to problems of coital frequency:
    • Frequent intercourse (several times a day) due to the misconception that it will help conception. This lowers sperm count. This impact is greater on men with marginal fertility. Normal counts generally are not lowered into the infertile range by daily ejaculation.
  • Errors in sexual techniques may result in infertility:
    • Intravaginal use of lubricants due to weak spermicidal nature.
    • Frequent douching makes the vaginal environment hostile to sperm.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Infertility
Written by Mike Berkley, L.Ac., DA(RI)
Although health and healing are the common goals of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and allopathic medicine, their ideas on the etiology of disease, disease itself and the process used to regain health are decidedly different. The allopathic physician learns that disease must be cured by prescribing medicine, which kills bacteria or renders a virus ineffective; at times surgical intervention is a necessity. There is nothing inherently wrong with this approach. It often works. The question worth exploring is why TCM succeeds where allopathic medicine fails? What is the mechanism of action of acupuncture and herbal medicine, which results in palliation or cure that is not manifest in biomedicine? Though the goal of TCM is to cure a patient, the doctor of TCM attempts to do this not by treating the disease but rather by treating the whole person, taking into account the various attributes of an individual which, when combined, account for an individual being sick or healthy. A person, according to the tenets of TCM is more than their pathology. While treating the pathology may yield impressive results, they are commonly temporary. A person is not, according to TCM, represented solely by his or her illness, but by the accumulation of every human interaction engaged in from the moment of birth, including the values of and the culture from which the individual develops. The emotional experiences, eating habits, work habits, work and living environment, personal habits and the social milieu are factors that contribute to disease and are factors which, when modified appropriately may lead to regained health.

Shattering the myths about male infertility
Treatment of male factors may be more successful and cost-effective than you think
Jay I. Sandlow, MD VOL 107 / NO 2 / FEBRUARY 2000 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE CME learning objectives
  • To understand the relative frequency of male factors in infertile couples
  • To identify causes of male subfertility
  • To know which causes of male subfertility are treatable
This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables Preview : Male factors play a role in up to half of subfertile couples, contrary to the myth that male factors rarely play a role. In this article, Dr Sandlow counters this and other myths about male infertility and suggests that primary care physicians can increase a couple's chance of conceiving by evaluating for male as well as female factors. This article will also help primary care physicians provide appropriate education and treatment, as well as determine when to make a referral to a male-infertility specialist.
Sandlow JI. Shattering the myths about male infertility: treatment of male factors may be more successful and cost-effective than you think. Postgrad Med 2000;107(2):235-45 I n recent years, infertility has received increasing public attention. It is estimated that nearly 10% of couples are infertile (ie, unable to conceive after attempts over a span of at least 1 year) and that one of every five couples between the ages of 35 and 44 has difficulty conceiving. This article examines some of the myths associated with male infertility and subfertility and identifies the role of the primary care physician in managing the condition.

80. Infertility - Acupuncture And Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese medicine Can Enhance Your Fertility Treatment. Another major cause of infertility in Chinese medicine is the Deficiency of Kidney Chi.
http://www.nancyrakela.com/infertility.html
Chinese Medicine Can Enhance Your Fertility Treatment. Nancy Rakela, O.M.D., L.Ac. has helped many couples with the challenges of infertility through the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine. She has knowledge of the latest infertility procedures and medications and has expertise in integrating Chinese Medicine with western assisted reproductive techniques. She is also very easy to communicate with. Early Chinese medical literature dating back 2000 years discusses fertility treatment for both men and women by regulating the menstrual cycle in women and increasing and strengthening the sperm in men Chinese medicine treats the body's natural healing energies by treating the whole person-body, mind and spirit. In this way Chinese medicine treats not just the symptoms but the root cause of the problem. Chinese medicine strengthens one's overall health and balances the endocrine system. It helps reduce the side effects and the accumulated toxicity of fertility medications and brings more blood flow to the uterus to enhance the outcome of assisted reproductive procedures.
According to Chinese Medicine, the following symptom patterns of Liver Chi Stagnation and Kidney Chi Deficiency are contributing causes of infertility. When we speak of the liver or of the kidney in Chinese medicine, we are not speaking of a problem with that specific organ. We are speaking of the energetic functioning of that organ and its related energy channel or meridian.
