community diaries shop Mind Over "Matter" Infertility, Medicine and the Mind/Body Connection By Kelly Burgess Tammy Quinn and Beth Heller know from personal experience that infertility impacts every aspect of a couple's lives. It's stressful, painful, depressing and discouraging. Marriages break up. Family ties are strained. Some people lose their jobs or suffer terrible financial setbacks. Until recently, infertility treatments focused on the patient's pelvis, not on their psyche. All of this is about to change. One important sign that the focus of infertility treatments is shifting is the recent partnership between the Fertility Centers of Illinois and Pulling Down the Moon, a holistic center dedicated to redefining the meaning of fertility. Pulling Down the Moon was founded by Quinn and Heller and based upon their individual experiences with infertility treatments. Pulling Down the Moon
Heller of Chicago, Ill., was in the hospital when interviewed for this article; she had just given birth to her first child, Jackson, conceived with the help of Clomid. All births are special, but Jackson's birth followed a harrowing journey down the path of infertility that included one miscarriage and the devastating stillbirth of her previous child at 38 weeks. Her friend and company co-founder, Quinn of Wilmette, Ill., had been through her own infertility ordeal. The end result was the birth of her twins six years ago, but she still remembers the emotional anguish she and her husband endured.

Chinese Medicine Infertility and Chinese Medicine
Male sterility (MS) means infertility caused by disorders of male reproductive system. Its clinical manifestations include abnormal sperm such as spermacrasia, aspermia, dead spermatozoon, azoospermia etc, and disturbance of sexual function, such as impotence, spermatorrhea, nonejaculation etc. The cause of the disease is rather complex. It may be roughly classified into two kinds: the functional cause and the organic one or the primary one and secondary one. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), MS belongs to the categories of "cold semen," "scanty semen," "impotence" and "persistent erection" etc. CLINICAL TREATMENT 1. Types based on symptom-sign differentiation and their treatment. Some physicians classified male sterility into two types: 1. Deficit due to deficiency of kidney Manifestations: Lumbago, weak legs, fatigue, lack of strength, clear urine in larger quantities, much urine at night

by Roger C. Hirsh, OMD, L.Ac. Homepage Back
BACKGROUND
There are several advantages to using Traditional Chinese Medicine as an approach to heightening a couple's fertility.
SOME ADVANTAGES OF USING TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
  • TCM sees the person as an integral Mind/body organism, thereby does not treat just symptoms/diseases. TCM ventures to stimulate the bodies natural healing potential by treating root causes rather than just symptoms. TCM, used in the treatment of infertility, minimizes undesired side effects and accumulated toxicity from invasive procedures and drug therapies, known and unknown. Traditional Chinese medicine may be used to strengthen and balance one's general health so that IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, ICSI, AHT and TET procedures are more effective. The TCM patient derives general health benefits and endocrine system balancing from specific acupuncture and herbal regimes. Pregnancy becomes easier to achieve and postpartum recuperation happens faster. Medical studies have been done in China to verify this type of whole body health enhancement. The widespread use of TCM suggests that it is a complete traditional medical health care system and can be used with or without the integration of Western medical techniques. The integration of Western medicine, as we know it in America, began in the Orient less than a century ago. It is called INTEGRAL CHINESE MEDICINE (ITCM). Ancient medical techniques of acupuncture and herbs utilized with modern procedures, seem to work best.

Glossary of Infertility Terms Female Infertility
Adhesions: Rubbery or filmy bands of scar tissue often caused by a previous infection or surgery or endometriosis that attach to the surface of reproductive organs and also the bowels or bladder. Adhesions to or around the fallopian tubes and ovaries may block a tube or prevent an egg (oocyte) from meeting with a sperm.
    Amenorrhea: the absence of menstruation
    Anovulation: lack of ovulation
Artificial Insemination: Prepared or washed sperm is placed into the uterus using a specialized catheter.
Autologous Endometrial Coculture: Growth of embryos on top of your own endometrial (womb) cells.
Basal Body Temperature (BBT): a woman's temperature upon first awakening in the morning. A rise of about one degree Fahrenheit is seen in the middle of the cycle to help predict ovulation. Charting of these temperatures is very popular but can be imprecise.
Blastocyst: a more developed embryo, often referred to as a preimplantation embryo. It begins to implant into the uterine lining 6-7 days after fertilization.
Bromocriptine: used to treat abnormally high prolactin (pituitary hormone responsible for breast milk production) levels that may result in infertility and amenorrhea. Prolactin may be overproduced due to pituitary brain tumors, as a side effect of various medications, chest wall trauma, or breast implants.
