ICPSR Members Have Free Access to Unpublished Census Datasets at the MCRDC
To benefit its members, ICPSR has purchased a "seat" in the Michigan Census Research Data Center (MCRDC), and researchers from ICPSR member institutions may apply to use the seat without paying MCRDC laboratory fees. The MCRDC enables qualified researchers with approved projects to conduct research using unpublished data from the Census Bureau's economic and demographic programs. All MCRDC research is conducted within its secure laboratory facility located in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Researchers are invited to submit proposals to use the MCRDC. Proposals are now accepted throughout the year. All research in MCRDC must have a Census Bureau purpose. Researchers with projects in the MCRDC must have special sworn status with the Census Bureau and the MCRDC assists researchers in obtaining this status. Proposals require approximately one month for review. To apply to use the ICPSR-supported seat, researchers should submit a copy of their MCRDC research proposal, together with a brief letter requesting use of the ICPSR seat, to Erik Austin, ICPSR Assistant Director and Director of Collection Development, at least one week before submission of a proposal to the MCRDC. Note that ICPSR's role in the application process is only to verify ICPSR membership and does not involve proposal review. For more information about ICPSR support for research at the MDRDC, contact Erik Austin at

Study finds it controls regular release of eggs By Ed Edelson
HealthDay Reporter (HealthDay is the new name for HealthScoutNews.) THURSDAY, July 10 (HealthDayNews) Researchers have discovered a gene that could play a part in helping both women who want to have children and those who don't and it might help fight cancer, to boot. The gene plays a central role in a network that controls the periodic release of eggs for fertilization, says a report in the July 11 issue of Science by researchers at Harvard's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Female mice bred to lack the gene had fewer and smaller litters and were infertile after 15 weeks, which is equal to early adulthood for a woman. Detailed studies found the follicles segments of the ovary that contain eggs were activated earlier in life than normal and depleted earlier. Activation means that one follicle of the many that a female carries changes from a resting phase to an active stage, maturing so the egg will be released. This activation process is controlled by a family of genes, and the one described in the latest study, dubbed FoXo3a, plays a vital role in that family.

    Science News
    July 8, 2000
In women with polycystic ovary syndrome, immature eggs distend the ovaries, leading to infertility. Such women also exhibit many classic risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol, increased abdominal fat, and diabetes. So far, however, studies have not demonstrated that these women are at higher-than-normal risk of developing heart disease. Some of the first direct evidence for such a link comes from a study of 31 women with polycystic ovary syndrome and 53 healthy women matched for age, weight, and waist-to-hip ratio. All were 30 to 45 years old. About 15 percent of the healthy women had detectable amounts of calcium in the arteries of their hearts, compared with 36 percent of the women with the syndrome, reports Rose C. Christian of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Such calcium deposits are early signs of fatty plaques in blood vessels, which can lead to high blood pressure and heart attacks. Overall, in this Minnesota community, about 10 percent of women in their 40s and 33 percent of men the same age have detectable amounts of calcium in their arteries, Christian says. While premenopausal women are generally at lower risk for heart disease than men of the same age are, she says, "polycystic ovary syndrome erases the gender protection."

Gene Linked To Infertility In Mice; Findings May Apply To Humans

Illustration by Clifford Alejandro PopSci talks with the new reproductive technology watchdog.
    March 2003
PS What needs to be done to understand the risks ART might have?
KH: There is an enormous and really tragic paucity of data about the outcomes of ART. There needs to be follow up done to see what effects these procedures have, and who's going to fund this kind of work is a big question. This work is expensive, and for the feds it's scary and not high on their list of things to support, because it gets dangerously close to research on embryos.
PS Yet there's such a huge debate over cloning, which raises similar issues.
KH: Right. There's an irony here that I just keep finding myself stumped over. Over the last several years, any number of groups have spent a lot of time and attention trying to figure out where they are on cloning, then advocating that position. But even in your wildest dreams, how widespread will reproductive cloning ever be? Is it going to be a real reproductive choice for my nine year-old when he decides that he's ready to build a family? Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we've got ARTs that are here and now. While any number of erudite bodies have sat around meeting tables talking about the necessity for broad public discussion about ART, there really has not been any. So that's one of our primary objectives.
PS How does the Center hope to affect research and regulation?
