U.S. Criminal History in Indonesia
by S. Brian Willson
U.S. SENATOR SPARKMAN: "At a time when Indonesia was kicking up pretty badlywhen we were getting a lot of criticism for continuing military aidat that time we could not say what that military aid was for. Is it secret anymore?"
U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE ROBERT MCNAMARA: "I think in retrospect, that the aid was well justified."
SPARKMAN: "You think it paid dividends?"
MCNAMARA: "I do, sir."
Hearings on Foreign Assistance,
before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
"The United States wished things to turn out as they did, and worked to bring this about. The Department of State desired that the United Nations prove utterly ineffective in whatever measures it undertook. This task was given to me, and I carried it forward with no inconsiderable success."
Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, in a cable to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Jan. 23, 1976 muting U.N. opposition to Indonesia's Dec. 7, 1975 invasion of East Timor
"It is the explicit policy of the Indonesian security forces to meet peaceful and unarmed civilian protests with force. Military training from the United States thus directly undermines the democratic movement in Indonesia."

83. U.S. Committee For Refugees: Political History Of Aceh
Given indonesia s current problems and Aceh s complex history, the Aceh Merdeka movement can be seen as part political, part religious, and part economic.

Political History of Aceh
Political Violence in Indonesia
At first glance, the reasons behind the Acehnese struggle for independence and their assertion of refugee status are not self-evident. Aceh is, after all, overwhelmingly Muslim, like the rest of Indonesia, and the Acehnese make no claim to a distinct ethnicity or, necessarily, political ideology. A brief exploration of Aceh's history, however, explains the mix of factors that led Aceh into a "war of national liberation" and turned thousands of its people into exiles. According to some historians, Islam first entered the Indonesian archipelago, and possibly all of Southeast Asia, through Aceh sometime around the year 700. The first Islamic kingdom, Perlak (a prosperous trading port in what is now Aceh), was established in the year 804. Much later, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the port of Aceh became entangled, along with the rest of what is now Indonesia, in the European colonial powers' competition for worldwide political and economic dominance Interested parties included the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and British. Paul Wolfowitz, Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and former U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, says that for many centuries Aceh was a very distinct and influential political entity. "The Sultan of Aceh," he says, "along with the Sultan of Malacca, was a major controller of trade through the straits."

The Wallace Line , named after 19th century naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, marks a point of transition between the flora and fauna of Western and Eastern Indonesia and acts as the Western boundary of West Nusa Tenggara which includes the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa. Lombok is noticeably different to its close neighbour, Bali. The northern part of the island is mountainous and lush with tall trees and shrubs. The south, on the other hand is arid and covered by savannas.
Large Asian mammals are absent and replaced instead by large numbers of marsupials, lizards, cockatoos and parrots. The difference becomes more pronounced as one moves further east where dry seasons are more prolonged and the land is dry and bush-like, and so in many areas corn and sago are the staple food, instead of rice.
At around the time Islam first came to these islands in the 1 6th century, four Hindu Kingdoms co-existed in apparent peace in what is now West Nusa Tenggara and is still the religion embraced by those in the west of Lombok, who are primarily Balinese. Lombok experienced strong Balinese influences in the past, but has still retained a unique identity. The indigenous people of Lombok, the Sasaks, are predominantly Moslem and have a strong, distinguished tradition as do the people of neighouring Sumbawa.

Project for a Netherlands Oral History Archive on Indonesia 1940-1962
Since August 1994 a group of Dutch historians has taken the initiative to constitute a national archive of interviews with Dutchmen about their life experiences during the late colonial period (1940-1962). Recently this has resulted in the foundation of the (Foundation for the Oral History of Indonesia).

Staff members from the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (KITLV), the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation (RIOD), the International Institute of Social History (IISG), the History Department of the Royal Dutch Army together with the universities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Utrecht participate in this Foundation. Chairperson is professor dr. Heather Sutherland of Amsterdam Free University. The coordinator is Fridus Steijlen. There are three main scientific aspects to the project: recording the life histories of representative samples of the Indies society; creating a resource base (the archive); and conducting research. The respondents to be interviewed should belong to all levels of colonial society, for instance, persons active in the commercial and agricultural sectors, in the civil service, in technical and free professions, in the armed forces and the police, and in the religious missions. The necessity and urgency of this project are both high. There has been no attempt to systematically preserve the oral history of a period which engages the minds and emotions of a considerable segment of the Dutch population. While people talk, the last "Indische generatie" is dying out.

It was a strange, and sometimes pathetic, opera Indonesians were treated to over the past month. Rather than a lesson in sensibility, Indonesians were instead presented with a comedy as the nation’s most senior politicians scurried about looking for cohorts to accompany them on their bid for power.
Presidential Election 2004 more ... Looking for a Winning Edge—The Race for the Presidency Begins
July 5, 2004, will mark a turning point in Indonesian history. For the first time in the country’s 59-year history, Indonesians will have a chance to directly elect their national leader. While the recently concluded April 5 legislative elections may have created momentum for one nominee over another, the advent of six potential tickets vying for the presidency leaves the door open for any one of them to become the country’s first directly elected president.
