Prehistory
Java was one of the earliest places where human beings lived. In 1891 the fossil skull of Java Man (Homo erectus) was discovered in Central Java. This erect near-man lived at a time when Europe was under ice and most of Indonesia was part of Asia. The species ranged from Africa all the way north to the glacial border of Europe and east to China, thriving some 500 000 years ago at the very beginning of the Pleistocene epoch. Charcoal and charred bones indicate these people used fire. Homo erectus was not an ancestor of present-day Indonesians but a vanished race in its own right.
Excavations at Sangiran in Central Java uncovered an even more primitive type. Then, in 1931, 11 skullcaps were found at Ngandong, belonging to a more advanced race than Homo erectus - the so called Solo Man. All 11 skullcaps has been deliberately cracked open: it is assumed Solo Man was a brain-eating cannibal. Found with the busted skulls was an astonishingly rich fossil bed of 23 000 mammalian bones, mostly of extinct oxen, elephants, and hippos. Also uncovered were scrapers, borers, chopers, and stone balls for use in slings.

EARLY HISTORY
Beginning in the 1890s, paleontologists discovered fossil remains of creatures on the island of Java that, while probably not the direct ancestors of modern humans, were closely related to them. These Javan hominids, known by scientists as Homo erectus , lived 500,000 years ago and some possibly as long as 1.7 million years ago. Their remains are identified as Jetisthe earlier specimens found in eastern Javaand Trinillater specimens found in Central Java, including the Solo River area. Evidence of probable descendants of the Trinil erectus , known as Homo soloensis or Solo Man, was found at Ngandong, also in Central Java; these descendants are thought to have evolved between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. Assemblages of stone tools have not clearly been tied to Homo soloensis , but there is evidence that these early Homo sapiens had a rudimentary social organization (small hunting and gathering bands) and used simple tools around 40,000 years ago. Many observers agree that the modern inhabitants of Indonesia may be descended from Homo erectus . Although insufficient paleographical information makes it impossible to determine precisely the dates of migrations by modern Homo sapiens , contrary to earlier hypotheses of migration from the Malay Peninsula, many experts believe that Indonesia's early population comprised of the ancestors of most of its present inhabitantswas the product of continued hominid evolution within the archipelago. There was, of course, continuing seepage of other populations into the gene pool, contributing to the complex ethnographic picture of Indonesia. That the archipelago may have developed its own

It is believed that Indonesia must have existed during the Pleitocene period (4 million years BC) when it was linked with the present Asian mainland. It was during this period that the Homonids made their first appearance and Java Man inhabited the part of the world now called Indonesia. Java Man, named Pithecanthropus Erectus by Eugence Dubois who found the fossils on the island of Java, must have been the first inhabitant of Indonesia. When the sea level rose as the result of the melting ice north of Europe and the American continent, many islands emerged, including the Indonesian archipelago. It was also during this period (3000-500 BC) that Indonesia was inhabited by Sub Mongoloid migrants from Asia who later inter-married with the indigenous people. Later still (1000 BC) inter-marriage occured with Indo-Arians migrants from the south Asian sub-continent of India. The first indian migrants came primarily from Gujarat in Southeast India during the first Christian era.

History of railways in Indonesia
In June 17, 1864, Governor-General Mr. L. A. J. W. Baron Sloet van Beele broke ground for the first railway line in Java, which was then part of Netherlands East Indies. The line belonged to the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (Netherlands East Indies Railway Company), and the first line in operation was between Semarang and Tanggung, opened in August 10, 1867. The line was then unprofitable, so the company turned to the government for help in completing the rest of the 166 km long main line to Yogyakarta through the Vorstenlanden. The great cost involved in the building was partly caused by the decision to build the tracks at the standard gauge (1435 mm/4' 8½"). This also resulted in the selection of a narrower gauge for most of the later construction, after a 1869 report by J. A. Kool and N. H. Henket showed the economy and suitability of 1067 mm (3' 6") gauge.

Indonesia Time and Date Indonesia History Back to Top Before european intrusions into the islands by Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch seeking to monopolize the lucrative trade in spices and other marketable products, the more than 13,000 islands constituting the Republic of Indonesia were home to a diverse array of cultures and civilizations that had been influenced by HinduBuddhist ideas from India and by Islam, as well as indigenous beliefs. Although the Portuguese and Spanish presence in the archipelago had limited impact, the Dutch United East India Company established a trading post on the north coast of Javawhat later became known as Jakartaseized control of the spice trade, and gradually asserted military and political control over the archipelago. This process of colonization was well advanced on Java by the mid-eighteenth century and largely completed in the rest of the archipelago by the first decade of the twentieth century. Under both the VOC and, after 1816, the Netherlands Indies government, Dutch policies served essentially economic goals, namely the exploitation of Indonesia's rich endowment of natural resources. Indeed, during the mid-nineteenth century, the Cultivation System on Javathe forced growing of cash crops brought the Netherlands considerable profits. At the same time, however, a cycle of poverty and overpopulation emerged among Java's rural population. Modern scholars have debated the degree to which this cycle can be attributed to the Cultivation System. As a result of the cycle of poverty and overpopulation, by the beginning of the twentieth century, the Dutch government sought to improve the welfare of the people under what was known as the Ethical Policy. But, although education and welfare facilities were expanded, the Dutch did little to promote self-government and did not recognize the people's aspirations for independence.

Indonesian History
Scientists have found human bones on the Island Java. Indians began life in the A.D. In 1497-1498 Vasco Da Gama found a sea route from Europe to Indonesia. He told Europeans and they came to Indonesia and started taking islands, like bullies. Indonesia has over 700,000 fishing boats but most are sailboats. There are about 3,000 motor boats. On January 11, 1942 during World War II, Japanese forces landed on the Netherlands Indies. On February 27, the Japanese forces defeated an Allied fleet in the battle of the Java sea. They occupied the Netherlands on March 7, and the allies surrendered the next day. The collapse of the Dutch showed Indonesians that Europeans were not superior to Asians. Indonesia today has a government which is trying to solve the severe political and economic problems that came from Sarukon's government. Their government operates Indonesian's postal, telegraph, and telephone systems and its radio and television services but only a few cities get this. All of the cities in Java have television. There are about 120 Indonesian daily newspapers. The largest paper, called the Merdecy of Jakarta, has 45,000 copies. Transportation has been hard since forever because of the seas, thick forests, and the mountains.

British Temporary Rule
In 1814 the British came to Indonesia and built Fort York in Bengkulu on the west coast of Sumatra. It was later renamed Fort Mariborough.
During the Napoleonic wars in Europe when Holland was occupied by France, Indonesia fell under the rule of the British East India Company (1811-1816). Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles was appointed Lieutenant Governor General of Java and dependencies. He was subordinated to the Governor General in Bengal, India.
Raffles introduced partial self-government and abolished the slave trade. In those days slaves were captured and traded by foreigners. He also introduced the land-tenure system, replacing the hated Dutch forced-agricultural system, whereby crops were grown and surrendered to the Government. Borobudur and other temples were restored and research conducted. Raffles wrote his famous book, 'The History of Java," in which he described Java's high civilization and culture.
During the British stay in Sumatra (1814-1825), William Marsden wrote a similar book on the history of Sumatra, which was published in 1889.

The Japanese Occupation
After their attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, the Japanese forces moved southwards to conquer several Southeast Asian countries. After Singapore had fallen, they invaded the Dutch East Indies and colonial army surrendered in March 1942.
Soekarno and Hatta were released from their detention. Japanese began their propaganda campaign for what they called "Great East Asia Coprosperity". But Indonesians soon realized that it was a camouflage for Japanese imperialism in place of Dutch colonialism. . .
To further the cause of Indonesia's independence, Soekarno Hatta appeared to cooperate with the Japanese authorities. In reality, however, Indonesian nationalist leaders went underground and masterminded insurrections in Blitar (East Java), Tasikmalaya and lndramayu (West Java), and in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Under the pressure of the 4th Pacific war, where their supply lines were interrupted, and the increasing of Indonesian insurrections, the Japanese ultimately gave in to allow the red-and-white flag to fly as the Indonesian national flag. Recognition of "Indonesia Raya" as the national anthem and Bahasa Indonesia as the national language followed. Hence, the youth's pledge of 1928 was fulfilled.

History: Modern Indonesia is an amalgam of more than 13,000 islands incorporating a wide variety of cultural and religious traditions. For almost 1000 years, Indonesia has been involved in maritime trade resulting in a wide range of religious, cultural and ethnic influences. The Chinese were among the first to trade with the islands, followed in the eighth century AD by Hindu and Buddhist merchants from India who built up two empires, known as Srivijaya and Majapahit. These were supplanted in the 13th century by Islamic influences brought by Arab and Malay seafarers. The English and Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in the area in the 16th century but in 1595 the Dutch East India Company took control of trade in the area. From 1814 until the Japanese invasion during World War II, Indonesia’s people and resources were subjected to the autocratic Dutch rule. The main independence movement, the Indonesian Nationalist Party (PNI), emerged in the 1920s under the leadership of Ahmed Sukarno. It was thoroughly suppressed by the Dutch and remained largely underground until the Dutch East Indies were overrun by the Japanese during World War II. The Japanese installed a puppet PNI government for the duration of their occupation. Following the Japanese defeat in 1945, the PNI declared independence. This was quickly challenged by the Dutch who despatched a military expeditionary force to Indonesia and arrested Sukarno. However by 1949, under international pressure, they were forced to concede the country’s sovereignty.
