Indonesia - Government urged to speed up Kyoto Protocol ratification
The Jakarta Post, February 5, 2003 Leony Aurora The government needs to quickly ratify the Kyoto Protocol to be able to compete with other countries in acquiring millions of U.S. dollars worth of international funding. The funds are available under a United Nations-run Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) funding scheme provided by developed countries. But the ratification was being hindered by lengthy bureaucratic procedures in drafting the necessary laws, said Liana Bratasida, the assistant for global environmental affairs at the Ministry of Environment. Speaking at a seminar, Liana said the ministry had been trying to complete the draft law for the past two years. The existing draft needed to be discussed with other government institutions before being submitted to the House of Representatives, she said. The Kyoto Protocol, conceived in 1997, identifies 40 industrialized countries as polluters the Annex I group and requires them to lower their greenhouse gas emission levels to 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. However, to maintain current production levels, Annex I countries can fund projects in developing countries that lead to lower emissions.

How Indonesia's government lost its "legitimacy"
Suharto's Indonesia is among the world's most corrupt countries, a centre ofcrony-capitalism that has allowed Suharto and his family to amass a fortuneestimated at $30 billion -money essentially stolen from a country where tensof millions languish in poverty. Indonesians, for the most part, seemedresigned to the corruption and nepotism, so long as their economy continuedgrowing at the 8 percent rate it had averaged throughout the decade. Whenthe economy collapsed last fall, Indonesians saw no reason to continuetolerating Suharto's abuses... "Once the economy there disintegrated, the regime had no other base of legitimacy," James Reardon-Andersondirector of Asian studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. said. The Atlanta Journal, 24 May 1998 Back to main text
Turmoil in Asia
Until recently, many in Asia were often relaxed in their attitudes aboutcorruption. In a region used to high levels of growth, corrupt or illicitbehaviour was often overlooked. However, two developments have forced aradical reassessment, to the point where few would now deny that corruptionexerts a heavy cost upon development in Asia. The first is the Asian crisis, and the fact that many have credited corruption, cronyism and nepotism withmaking a major contribution to the currency turmoil and falling stockmarkets that engulfed the region from mid-l997 until recently. The seconddevelopment has been the rapid expansion in solid analytical work on theconsequences of corruption, which has underscored just how costly, widespread and systematic corruption can be.

Indonesia's Government Trying to Curb Military's Influence on Politics
Aired March 5, 2000 - 2:08 p.m. ET THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. ASIEH NAMDAR, CNN ANCHOR: Indonesia's former military chief, General Wiranto, says he blocked plans for a military coup during a wave of riots in 1998. The protests forced former President Suharto to release his 32-year grip on power. General Wiranto told a parliamentary panel that he resisted pressure to seize power because he was determined to uphold the constitution. Indonesia's fledgling democratic government has been trying to curb the military's influence on politics since taking office late last year. RCTI takes a look at some of the changes.

Sekilas tentang Indonesia
POSISI GEOGRAFIS
SEJARAH GEOLOGI Pulau-pulau Indonesia terbentuk pada jaman Miocene (12 juta tahun sebelum masehi), Palaeocene ( 70 juta tahun sebelum masehi), Eocene (30 juta tahun sebelum masehi), Oligacene (25 juta tahun sebelum masehi).
