News article reports the tobacco industry keeps the government afloat, but at a huge cost in ordinary lives.

No. 56 October-
December 1998 Worshipping cancer sticks The tobacco industry keeps the government afloat, but at a huge cost in ordinary lives.
Catherine Reynolds.
One of the most evocative scents of Indonesia is the smell of kretek clove cigarettes. But behind the smoke haze of this rich sensory aroma few people contemplate the economics of Indonesia's tobacco industry. It is the government's largest source of revenue after oil, gas and timber, a reliable internal revenue, unlikely to suffer from external market fluctuations. This revenue recouped a staggering Rp 4.49 trillion in excise in 1997/98. That's over AU$ 2 billion at pre-crash exchange rates. Amazingly, the tobacco industry is also the second largest employer after government. Employment estimates range from 4 - 17 million workers, in areas such as farming, trading, transportation and advertising, as well as those actually involved in producing cigarettes. The Indonesian government is critically dependent on the industry. As a result, opposition to it is discouraged and cigarette advertisers have free rein. In 1996 for instance, Indonesia's Health Minister confirmed that 'the government had no intention of trying to regulate smoking through legislation'. PT Sampoerna is one of the largest Indonesian tobacco companies. They confidently noted in their 1995 Annual Report:

Introduction Indonesian Islamist Organisations What Kind of Threat do Indonesian Islamist Organisations Pose? What is the Presence of Al Qaeda and Other Transnational Extremist Organisations? ... Endnotes Introduction In the wake of the 11 September attacks on the United States, attention has turned to Indonesia, and the possibility of Islamic terrorist groups operating from or within that country. Indonesia has experienced a resurgence of Islamic activity since the fall of President Soeharto in 1998, but the vast majority of Indonesian Muslims practice a moderate form of the religion. Indonesia is the world's largest Islamic country, with 170 to 180 million Muslims out of a total population of around 215 million. Although most Indonesians are concerned with the response of the United States to the terrorist attacks, the vast majority do not as yet support militancy. However, some Islamist organisations have become increasingly vocal in the weeks since the attacks. In addition, a number of reports have pointed to connections between these groups and transnational terrorist networks such as Al Qaeda, the organisation headed by Osama bin Laden. Rohan Gunaratna from the St Andrew's University Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence has stated recently that the Al Qaeda network has a number of cells active in Indonesia.

Indonesian MPs call for 'acceptable government'
Wahid, with daughter, threatens 'tough action' against, what he says, lawmakers' attempts to violate the constitution By staff and wire reports JAKARTA, Indonesia In a rare show of unity, Indonesia's political parties have come together to warn that without an acceptable government the fragile country's huge problems will never be resolved. Leaders of various political factions in Indonesia's parliament including those from President Abdurrahman Wahid's National Awakening Party (PKB) met Wednesday to discuss a wide range of issues. However, they refused to say whether they had spoken about impeaching Wahid. The president is under increasing pressure after parliament censured him twice following allegations of his roles in two multi-million dollar financial scandals. Opposition lawmakers have indicated they would like to hold a special session to impeach Wahid, who so far has denied any wrongdoing in the scandals.
