    About Indonesia Geography
Indonesia is a land of vivid contrasts. Gleaming urban skyscrapes tower above tiny roadside kiosks selling ancient herbal remedies thatch-roofed village houses sport a television in the family room and a team of oxen tethered in the yard. To understand the forces shaping the personality of Indonesia, past and present, many of the nation's most fundamental characteristics can be discerned from the contours of a map. The map reveals a sprawling nation, tracing the path of the Equator over several thousand miles. Comprising 13,700 islands a bridge between the landmass of Southeast Asia and the continent of Australia the vast archipelago of Indonesia spans three time zones over a width greater than the distance from Dublin to Moscow, or from Florida to Alaska. Indonesia's historical evolution has been strongly influenced by the sheer forces of it's own geography with the interplay between climate, rainfall and volcanic activity shaping agricultural and population patterns in different ways throughout the country's enormous diversity of islands. Islands such as Java and Bali are endowed with some of the most fertile soil of the Earth. For this reason, they are most heavily populated and enjoy the most ancient of cultures. Other regions such as Kalimantan, with its heavy forest canopy, or Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sunda) islands, with their more arid climate are home to smaller numbers of people.

... Tourism in Bali GEOGRAPHY An Island Built by Volcanoes Every aspect of Bali's geography and ecology is influenced by the towering range of volcanic peaks that dominate the island. They have created its landforms, periodically regenerated its soils, and helped to produce the dramatic downpours which provide the island with life-giving water. The Balinese recognize these geophysical facts of life, and the island's many volcanoes, lakes and springs are considered by them to be sacred. Bali is continually being formed by volcanic action. The island lies over a major subduction zone where the Indo-Australian plate collides with the rigid Sunda plate with explosive results. A violent eruption of Mt. Agung (3,142 m before the eruption; 3,014 in now) in 1963 showered the mountain's upper slopes with ash and debris that slid off as mudflows, killing thousands of people and laying waste to irrigation networks and rice fields that had been built up over many years. Mt Batur (1,717 in) to the west is also active, with greater frequency but less violence.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The Republic of Indonesia , world's largest archipelago An archipelago is a landform which consists of a chain or cluster of islands. Archipelagoes usually occur in the open sea; less commonly a large land mass may neighbour them. Archipelagos are often volcanic, forming along ocean ridges or hot spots, but there are many other processes involved in their construction, including erosion and deposition. The word comes from the Aegean Sea (Italian Arcipelago ), which literally means "chief sea", from Greek arkhi (leader) and pelagos (sea). The Aegean Sea is located between Greece in the west and Turkey in the east. The Venetian Dukes of Arcipelago ruled from Naxos, 1210 - 1566.

Australia includes the island of Tasmania, which is an Australian State. New Zealand is to the southeast; and Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor to its north. The name 'Australia' comes from the Latin phrase terra australis incognita ("unknown southern land", see Terra Australis).
