Easy-to-read guide for traveler or expat

Indonesian culture? A bit like saying Western culture... a rather broad term. But this book acknowledges that right away and does an admirable job of isolating the most important manners for visitors to know and use. The book's practical tips are especially useful, and these are organized with finger-tip simplicity (Do's and Don't's appendix is great), making this book easy to consult at a moment's notice. Business section and home help section ("Translating Needs into Action") are especially helpful. There are also meaty and interesting sections about Indonesian values, social structure, and food. It's a good read, will serve well the traveler or expat. Cultural quiz at the end, a test so silly no one could fail it, is the only negative to this guide.

Buy it even if you have no intention of going there.

Having lived in Jakarta for 18 months, reading Mr Bacons book took me straight back to the city that's ' in danger of imploding.'Straight back to the smells, the noises and the heat. The infomation and incredible insight that is packed into this book is quite amazing. I think it's difficult to understand quite how accurate this book iis until you've actually lived there. Really humourously written little stories had me chukling all the way through.I reckon , even if you are not about to move to Jakarta or even visit the place ,its well worth reading.
Jakarta At Your Door
If there's just one book to put in your rucksack on your travels to Jakarta, this is the one. It's obvious that the author not only knows his stuff, but loves Jakarta too! A winner!

The Columbia Chronologies of Asian History And Culture , edited by John S. Bowman offers an overview of political history, arts, culture, thought and religion, science and technology, economics and everyday life of all Asian countries from the Paleolithic era through 1998. The more than 30 Asian countries are individually analyzed on 580 pages. According to its political, military, economic and demographic weight, a state gets more or less space. China is treated on 115, Japan on 75 and India on 120 pages. The almost 100 pages of appendices contain information on National and Independence days, scientific-technological achievements in Asia and a chronological comparative overview of what happened in Asia and Europe at a given time. The detailed index takes another 70 pages. To make a long story short, this is the most comprehensive Asian history available. The only, but crucial thing missing in this reference work is a bibliography which would allow a reader to dig further on a specific issue.
Let's take the entry on Indonesia as an example. Its story is summarized on 15 pages. The description begins with the Pleistocene epoch (approximately 1,8 million to 8 thousand B.C.). Early evidence (2000 B.C.- A.D. 500), early Kingdoms (500-1377) and the rise of the Islamic kingdoms (1290-1682) are the subsequent parts of the entry. The European presence in Indonesia takes a bit more than four pages. In 1511, Portuguese explorers captured the port of Malacca, erected a fort there and settled in, but Portuguese corruption and disorganization soon led to the loss of the sea-trade control of Malacca and to the rise of Sumatran maritime trade centers. In 1595-98, the first expeditions to the East Indies by competing Dutch trade companies took place. In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was formed with a merger of the competing companies. England also entered the spice trade. In 1605, the Dutch East India Company occupied Ambon and established its headquarters.

Why anger and resentment in Indonesia's eastern frontier province are rising to dangerous levels
By Keith Loveard / Jayapura A FIRST SIGHTING OF Irian Jaya reveals a land of immense natural wealth. To fly over Indonesia's eastern frontier is to witness one of the world's last untouched tropical rain forests, rising to snow-covered peaks rich in copper, gold and other minerals. But an on-the-ground look soon makes it clear that all is not well in paradise. Jakarta's efforts to integrate the province into its vast confederation have made the Irianese an underclass of strangers in their own land. In the central market of the capital Jayapura, a few Irianese traders sit on the ground with their vegetables and fruit. Behind them, businessmen from Java and Sulawesi occupy the stalls, selling food, clothing and shoes. The minivans that serve as public transport are painted with names redolent of Java, Sulawesi and North Sumatra. It is Javanese not Irianese who ply the streets at night, selling chicken satay from carts lit by hurricane lamps. Government and private offices are full of outsiders and formal commerce is dominated by immigrants from Sulawesi. Jakarta has tried to help ease the western half of New Guinea into the 20th Century. But the bald fact, say the Irianese, is that the effort has largely been a failure. A mixture of prejudice, discrimination and government neglect has put the Irianese at risk of becoming paupers in their rich province. With hopes of a fair deal from Indonesia consistently dashed, the people are increasingly translating their anger and resentment into violence. The recent kidnapping of foreign and Indonesian researchers by members of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) shot the tensions into international headlines. Indonesians were shocked when two captives were hacked to death with axes only minutes from rescue.

Prehistory
Java was one of the earliest places where human beings lived. In 1891 the fossil skull of Java Man (Homo erectus) was discovered in Central Java. This erect near-man lived at a time when Europe was under ice and most of Indonesia was part of Asia. The species ranged from Africa all the way north to the glacial border of Europe and east to China, thriving some 500 000 years ago at the very beginning of the Pleistocene epoch. Charcoal and charred bones indicate these people used fire. Homo erectus was not an ancestor of present-day Indonesians but a vanished race in its own right.
Excavations at Sangiran in Central Java uncovered an even more primitive type. Then, in 1931, 11 skullcaps were found at Ngandong, belonging to a more advanced race than Homo erectus - the so called Solo Man. All 11 skullcaps has been deliberately cracked open: it is assumed Solo Man was a brain-eating cannibal. Found with the busted skulls was an astonishingly rich fossil bed of 23 000 mammalian bones, mostly of extinct oxen, elephants, and hippos. Also uncovered were scrapers, borers, chopers, and stone balls for use in slings.

Indonesia
Introduction With a population of almost 200 million people on 13,667 islands, Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago located between the continents of Asia and Australia, and between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Only 35% of the population live in urban areas, but there are more than 30 cities with 100,000+ population. Plus, five cities have a population of over one million. They are Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Semarang, and are all located on Java. To truly understand the socio-political culture in Indonesia, one needs to understand Java. Although the population has a significant Malay heritage, it is also diverse with over 300 distinct cultures residing within its borders. With each culture comes a unique language or dialect; however Bahasa Indonesia, the common language of the country, unites everyone. In tourist areas and population centers English is the most commonly spoken second language. Though the large majority of Indonesians follow the Islamic faith (85%), the intensity of their observance for their faith varies due to the large diversity within this nation. Christianity a distant second (10%). One important historic note is the strong sentiment against the Chinese. Keep this in mind and be sensitive to this reality. Fun Fact

To Nourish With Blood: Whip Fighting on Flores, Indonesia
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 3,751 Words Author : David Hicks
David Hicks is professor of anthropology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has written and translated six books on anthropology, the most recent of which is Cultural Anthropology, coauthored with Margaret A. Gwynne. Blood swathed its long, oozy stripe like a scarlet scimitar across the bronzed back of the young man as he flinched at the stroke of the buffalo whip. The spectators' appreciative hoots resounded around the village, and his rival jumped into the air in ecstatic proclamation of victory. Winning the whip fight, marked by success at drawing blood from a stalwart foe, would assuredly bring fertility to the victor's village lands and women alike. It would encourage the rains to arrive promptly, and the crops would be nourished. There would be a good harvest for the Manggarai people in the months to come.
That scorching summer afternoon in Boleng, a remote corner of Flores Island, Indonesia, I witnessed the most dramatic of Manggarai institutions. The main caci (tournament of whip fighting) embodies the intricate and complex values that give Manggarai culture its character. The main caci is performed on occasions sanctioned by religious tradition (although the impact of outsiders and tourism means that this is no longer exclusively so). Elders from the village selected as the site for one of these ritualized battles invite young men from other villages in the neighborhood to visit and challenge their young men to contests of blood.

Perhaps the most famous is the tradition of shadow puppet plays in which the wooden puppets of West Java - wayang golek - and the highly decorated leather puppets of Yogyakarta - wayang kulit - are used to portray gods, heroes and villains in literary epics that can last for many hours.
Also indigenous to the islands of Indonesia is the music of the gamelan , now hugely popular in the West, particularly since it was used to such haunting effect in the film "A year of Living Dangerously"
