Pupils could be working at their own pace on computers, using lesson plans downloaded from the internet, under government plans for a "digital curriculum" in England. Curriculum Online will provide teachers with the best resources available and will free them up to do what they do best - teaching
Education Secretary, Estelle Morris
Ministers think these model lessons and other content developed by the BBC and independent providers will allow pupils to work better at their own pace. From next September, £50m is being made available to fund what the government calls "Curriculum Online". The Department for Education said: "This ground-breaking service will bring exciting new learning materials to teachers and pupils' fingertips, enabling learning to become more flexible than ever."
It is not yet able to say how the £50m will be divided among England's 23,000 schools.

Our entry to thinkquest is called "Olympic Fever" which all of the team members have experienced at some point in the lead up to Sydney 2000. In "About Us" we describe our feelings on that important day when Sydney won the bid. We wanted to create an educational yet interesting site on most aspects of the Games in 2000, with sections about the paralympic games which have not been as widely publicised. This site provides a tour to familiarise the viewer with Sydney and the various venues, both within Sydney and in other states. To make the site truly interactive we added a quiz on Olympic facts, a poll for establishing what is the most popular Olympic sport and a section for teachers with lessons provided on a range of topics. Though students may initially view them as dull, biographies are the stuff that great classroom activities are made of history, honesty, and heroism. With the help of the Internet, every teacher can bring biographies into their classrooms! Included: Ten activities that begin with biographies! It seems that biographies are not the first choice of reading material among many young readers. As a matter of fact, boring is a word students often associate with biographies. How can you fight that misconception and introduce your students to the rich and engaging biographical tales your library has to offer? Take the recommendations of two resources from the Net, read a biography to your class, and implement one of our ten activities that begin with biographies. ONLINE BIOGRPAHY RESOURCE The Children's Book Council published a list of 42 excellent biographies to share with students in its online CBC Showcase . Ranging from Tara Lipinski to Quincy Jones and Nelson Mandela, a biography exists here for every reader. This resource is a great place to start your search for great biographies.

Writing Across the Curriculum Lesson Plans for Electives Introduction: Writing Across the Curriculum is an emphasis in the school setting today because we want students to be able to express themselves clearly and concisely in any future work situation they choose. Good writing is organized and creative thinking on paper. We write for many reasons: to inform, to persuade, to communicate, to tell a story, to reflect, to entertain, and to record what we know and present what we have learned. Writers must write in order to develop. Therefore, writing as a part of many subjects and disciplines is necessary if we want students become good writers. Listed below are a number of lesson plans from Language Arts and various Electives. At some point within each lesson, students will create various written products. Many of these plans may be adapted to several different disciplines. Click and explore. Adding "Snap" to Language Arts Taking photographs and using them as a starter or stimulus can be used to get into many subjects and disciplines. Students take a picture of themselves (biography), their animals (science, biology, nature study) , things that are important to them and then they use these photos as springboard for a writing project. Ah, baseball! The crack of the bat, the smell of the leather, the sight of green grass in the inner city . . .
and the potential for deepening our understanding of the history of the United States.
In this lesson students draw on their previous studies of American history and culture as they analyze primary sources from Jackie Robinson and Other Baseball Highlights, 1860s-1960s in American Memory. A close reading of two documents relating to Jackie Robinson's breaking of the racial barrier in professional baseball leads to a deeper exploration of racism in the United States, both in and out of sports. Objectives Students will:
    • Analyze primary documents closely. Research documents specific to the history of race relations
in the mid-20th century United States. Draw conclusions moving from the specific documents
to the broader society and test them for validity.

INTRODUCTION Handball is one of the few lifetime sports that is fitness AND skill related. The game offers the best of the benefits of the individual sport, yet is regularly played with a partner. Players at every skill level play for the sheer pleasure of the game. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, in his classic book, AEROBICS . states... "The best conditioning exercises are running, swimming, cycling, walking, HANDBALL, basketball and squash, and in just about that order." Note that the top GAME mentioned is HANDBALL! In a survey by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, fourteen popular sports and exercises were rated by seven fitness experts. Using the criteria of cardlo-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and balance, HANDBALL WAS RANKED NUMBER ONE. With the development of the new "White Ace handball", handball has become a sport for everyone. This ball is slightly softer than the regulation men's handball and does not hurt the hands. However, practically any ball, from a utility ball to a tennis ball, can be used. The best balls to use in teaching secondary students are racquetballs.

Students outline or diagram how to teach the specific essential skills for their favorite sport, then demonstrate the skills to the class, using classmates as active participants. Then students discuss reasons why sports, athletics or physical activities should be an important part of teens' lives. II. Objectives:
    • To identify personal favorite sports
    • To investigate the essential physical skills needed to play the sport
    • To diagram or outline the essential physical skill for the sport
    • To demonstrate (to peers) essential skills of the sport

Print 'About this Resource' and 'How to Use this Resource' The Australian Institute of Sport's commitment to Physical Education As Australians, we have always thought of ourselves as a great sporting nation. So it came as a surprise when we performed poorly at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. The Australian Institute of Sport was born of the need to do something about this - we had to find a way to support and develop our future world champion athletes in a way that would really make a difference. Now more than 21 years on, how things have changed! Australia is back among the top sporting nations of the world following our most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games ever, held in Sydney in 2000. As a country of just 20 million people, we finished fourth in the medal tally behind the United States, Russia and China. And we topped the medal tally in the Paralympics. The Australian Institute of Sport has played a big part in developing winning athletes who are strong in mind and body. Anyone who visits the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will be struck by the way in which its programs for athletes go way beyond the development of fitness and sporting abilities. It's all about developing well-rounded athletes - those who will be physically and mentally equipped to take on life's challenges, both in and out of the sporting arena. The benefits of this 'holistic' approach hold true for everyone, not just those at the top of their sport. And now, through this resource, teachers have the opportunity to draw on more than 21 years of AIS experience in developing the keys to a well-balanced lifestyle and communicate these to their students in fun and innovative ways.
