A statistical overview of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia
Introduction
This collection of statistics has been chosen for their relevance in highlighting the key characteristics of the Indigenous population. It focuses on key areas such as health, education, employment, housing, and contact with criminal justice and welfare systems. Where possible, the data is presented in a way that identifies absolute and relative change in the situation of Indigenous peoples over the past five and ten years, and provides some international comparisons. While reducing people and their experiences to percentages and numbers is problematic, statistics are useful as indicators of disparities and inequalities, and of similarities, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The statistics reproduced are intended to be representative of the current situation, although not exhaustive or comprehensive. The main source of information used is the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Census data, various surveys and data collection projects that it undertakes . Recently, the Steering Committee for the Review of Government Service Provision has also released the first national report on key indicators for overcoming Indigenous disadvantage which draws together data collected across all levels of government

    INTRODUCTION
This paper was originally produced in 1992, prior to the INTERNET and the explosion of information it has engendered. In updating it, I have tried to create links to online materials on indigenous peoples rights under international law. This paper is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to information on indigenous people. It is meant to be a guide to researching international law and indigenous peoples rights. Since this paper was finished, S James Anaya has published an excellent treatise on this area, Indigenous Peoples in International Law , New York, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996, (ISBN 0-19-508620-1), which is recommended reading for anyone interested in the legal treatment of indigenous peoples. As is mentioned below, this paper was originally delivered as part of a program on indigenous peoples rights. Another speaker covered American Indians. Because of that, this paper's coverage of American Indians is limited.

GENERAL top THE FOCUS OF THIS ISSUE: INDIGENOUS PEOPLES Indigenous peoples are the guardians of the forests. No-one is more interested than they are in ensuring the conservation of forests which are their homes, an integral part of their culture and provide for their livelihoods. All the previous WRM bulletins have reflected many of their struggles to protect the forests, but we have now decided to focus the entire bulletin on indigenous peoples, in order to both highlight the problems they confront and the solutions they are implementing to ensure the recognition of their rights as a first though crucial step to seriously address the ongoing forest crisis. The present bulletin has been produced in close collaboration with the Forest Peoples Programme which together with Fern acts as the WRM Northern Office and with other people who are either members of indigenous peoples organizations or who support the rights of indigenous peoples. Regardless of the authorship of each article, they all reflect the hopes and struggles of the indigenous peoples themselves, as well as the importance of external collaboration for achieving their aims. We hope that this bulletin will help to encourage more individuals and organizations concerned with forest conservation to understand the central role played by indigenous peoples in this respect and thereby to increase support for their right to continue being the guardians of the forests.

What's New Virtual Tour: Ancient Forests Under Siege by Bush Administration Forest Policies
In this field tour you will visit some of the public lands logging projects that target ancient, old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest. Some of these ancient forests have already been cut down under Bush's watch, while other projects are in planning and could be cut soon. This year, 188 logging projects threaten to destroy over 138 square miles of ancient, old-growth forests. If you thought ancient, old-growth forests on your public lands were protected from logging, think again.

Overview article from RAIPON (Russian Association of indigenous peoples of the North).

    General Information
The Khanty is the people of Western Siberia living in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomus Okrug (11.9 thousand. - 52.8 %), Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (7.2 thousand - 32.2 %) and the Tomsk Region (804 thousand - 3.6 %). (Fig. 1). Fig. 1. The area of the distribution and economic activities of the Khanty. According to the 1989 Census, the population is 22.5 thousand. The native names are Khanti Khande Kantek . The Khany fall into three ethnic groups (northern, southern and eastern), which differ in the dialects, native names, features of economy and culture, and also endogamy. In their turn, each of them divides into territorial subgroups, distinguished by the names of the rivers in whose basins they live. Before the early 20 th century, the Russian called the Khanty Ostyaki . Jointly with the Mansi and Hungarians, the Khanty language comprises the Ugric groups of the Finno-Ugric languages. The Khanty language has three dialect groups: the northern, southern, and eastern. The Khanty vocabulary reflects its close links with the neighbors: the Nenets, Tatars and Komi-Zyran.

Australia’s Federal Record: A review of Archives Act 1983 (Australian Law Reform Commission Report No 85, 1998) notes that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have had a significant but troubled relationship with recordkeeping by governments, churches and other organisations and individuals… At best, many of these records now seem intrusive and patronising. At worst, they can be cruel, malicious and misleading… yet the records created by Europeans are also of great importance to Indigenous people… [They] provide vital evidence on issues such as land rights and the reunification of families from whom children were removed forcibly. This page, as part of the Archives of Australia network, offers opportunities for the promotion and protection of collections of value to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
