    SOUTH AMERICA
    "Tropical Jungle"
    Casilda Pinche Sanchez

a young artist and teacher at the Amazon Project Author's note As a very young child growing up in western Michigan, my knowledge of South America began with a terror of the huge snakes in her vast jungles I often had nightmares of being crushed by an enormous boa constrictor. I would awake, barely able to breathe. South America terrified me. Yet in the 8th grade I read Hudson's Green Mansions and fell in love with Rima, the bird-girl, who moved with such grace and beauty through the trees. After that, South America was equally nightmare and ecstatic wonder, snake and magical bird, death and life, breath-stopping constriction and utter freedom. As a young adult, I slowly made my peace with the great snakes in my psyche, as well as in the rain forests. But the nightmare didn't end. From the 1960's onward, I became painfully aware that the habitat of those snakes and birds was being destroyed, mile by mile, inch by inch, as the rain forests vanished along with rare flowers, herbs, trees, and countless species. Today, as a crone, when I think of South America, I think first of the Rain Forests and my heart constricts exactly as if an anaconda were crushing me, but there's no anaconda now, there's something far worse an awareness of the fragile beauty being destroyed. If we, as a species, destroy the jungle's medicinal plants that might cure our worst diseases, a cynic might argue that that's

Treaty to Be Centerpiece of International Campaigns Around the World
Activists will be working with political parties to introduce the Treaty Initiative in parliaments around the world over the next year. In September 2002, activists will demand that governmental delegates to the Rio +10 Conference in South Africa endorse the Treaty to Share the Genetic Commons and make it the centerpiece of future biodiversity efforts. Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington, DC, says, "The gene pool should not be allowed to be claimed as commercially negotiable genetic information or intellectual property by governments, commercial enterprises, other institutions or individuals. The global gene pool is a shared legacy and, therefore, a collective responsibility." Mr Rifkin added, "A global treaty to share the gene pool is the most important task ahead of us as we make the transition into the Age of Biology." The Treaty Initiative to Share the Genetic Commons

The Diaguita culture was the most complex and numerous of aboriginal populations. About 200,000 natives compounded this people when the Spaniards arrived. They engaged in farming , building canals in order to water their corn, pumpkin and kidney bean crops . They adored Sun, thunder and lightning. They had similar leaderships to the caciques’ chieftancy and their families were monogamous.

    119. The Pre-Columbian History Of The Amerindians Of Trinidad And Tobago
a brief overview of the archaeological history of Trinidad and Tobago's indigenous peoples.
    http://www.centrelink.org/fntt/PreColumbian.html
A Brief Overview of the Pre-Columbian History of the Indigenous Peoples of Trinidad and Tobago
The following information was adapted from: Arie Boomert (1996) The Prehistoric Sites of Tobago: A Catalogue and Evaluation . Alkmaar, The Netherlands.
Peter Harris (N.d.) "Culture-Histories of Trinidad and Tobago: The Amerindian Community", St. Augustine, Trinidad: UWI Archaeological Centre (unpublished mimeograph).
The population of Tobago consisted of small-game hunters, fishers, collectors of wild vegetable foods, fruits and edible shells. Sites can be found around Southwest Tobago, dating to about 4875 years Before Present , or in the third millennium BC (Boomert, p. 23) In Trinidad , sites can be found which date as early as 6,000 BC . The earliest archaeological finds for both Trinidad and Tobago are pre-pottery and pre-agriculture (Boomert, p. 23). The people of this period are referred to in the archaeological literature as " Pre-Ceramic ", given that they apparently did not make pottery. Most of the tools for this period consisted of stone flakes with a cutting edge, and water-rolled stones used for grinding. In addition, their tools may have consisted of basketry, and items made from wood, reeds, and various fibres, but these would not have survived the climate and hence there are no such artefacts. Given the proximity of settlements to water, archaeologists surmise that the canoe may have been in use (Harris). There appears to have been continuous settlement between 6500 and 4000 BC, and some evidence in rising waters in areas and a concomittant move inland.
