As one of the six regional aquaculture learning centers (Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington), South Putnam conducts two to three workshops a year for beginning and advanced aquaculture instructors from around the nation. The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program and the Cooperative Extension Service have provided instructors for each of the training programs. The South Putnam program received a value-added grant from the state of Indiana to build a mobile aquaculture laboratory. The mobile lab was constructed to transport to other schools and special events (fairs, farm shows, FFA conventions) to outreach, promote and educate students and individuals throughout Indiana and beyond about aquaculture. South Putnam is also working with inner city schools in helping to set up and maintain aquaculture programs within their schools.

Vocational school broadens educational opportunities for adults
By JENNY KOPACESKI NEW CASTLE - Whether a GED is desired or an employee needs to learn welding for a promotion at work, the New Castle Area Vocational School offers adult education classes designed to fit the needs of the community. Bob Hobbs, director of the vocational school, said adults attend classes for a variety of reasons, including skill improvement or enrichment, preparation and testing for a General Educational Development diploma, preparation for the Graduation Qualifying Exam/ISTEP+, to finish credits for a high school diploma or to learn to read. "When an adult comes into the program, they're looking for something specific," Hobbs said. "We look for the needs of the adult population and continue to look for ways to do it better."

About the College - History Mission Since its inception 37 years ago, Ivy Tech State College has evolved from a small, post-secondary vocational school providing specialized workforce training, to a community college system with sophisticated, high-tech course offerings. Now the third largest public higher education institution in Indiana, Ivy Tech serves more than 62,000 students per year statewide through its 23-campus system. In 1963, Indiana Vocational Technical College was created by the Indiana General Assembly, with the support of the Indiana AFL-CIO, Indiana Farm Bureau and the state Chamber of Commerce. When College planners determined that occupational education and training needs differed around the state, the General Assembly approved the formation of 13 administrative regions to effectively serve the needs of each area. These regions were chartered between 1966 and 1969. The Central Indiana Region was created to serve residents of Marion, Morgan, Hancock, Johnson, Shelby, Boone, Hendricks and Hamilton counties. Classes were first offered at a rented facility in what is now Indianapolis International Airport in 1966. That first year, the fledgling campus enrolled 367 students in three technical programs. In 1983 the main campus moved to the former American United Life building at the corner of Fall Creek and Meridian, where enrollment has continued to rise. By fall 2001, the campus was serving more than 11,000 students in 22 degree programs.
