EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND THE WORLD OF WORK
A crucial factor in the formation of vocational identity is self-esteem. McDonald and Jessell (1992) found that those seventh and eighth graders who believed a variety of careers were possible for themselves had high self-esteem, could assess complex career information, and were primarily female, of middle to high socioeconomic status, and from two-parent families. Although boys thought most jobs were appropriate for either sex, 75% were unwilling to make nontraditional choices for themselves (ibid.). Although females appear more open to nontraditional careers at this age, middle school girls begin to feel the effects of gender bias on their aspirations (Silverman and Pritchard 1994). These findings suggest that middle school students need to learn to think about the future; recognize their responsibility for educational planning; broaden their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level; develop and maintain self-esteem; develop cognitive complexity (essential for the knowledge work of the future); have parental support for career choices; understand how school relates to future life roles; and recognize the broad scope of work in the 21st century.

Salem, Indiana In 1682, what is today known as Salem was owned by France. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in 1763. Then in 1778, Governor Patrick Henry of Virginia commissioned George Rogers Clark to capture British forts, and the fall of Vincennes caused Virginia to lay claim to the territory. In 1784, it became part of the United States. An early settler named the area after her hometown in North Carolina, and Salem, Indiana, was born. Salem officially became a city in 1936. Back To Top

http://baby.indstate.edu/IndianaNCA/
Welcome to the
Indiana North Central Association
Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement! The North Central Association Commission on Accre ditation and School Improvement is a nationally recognized regional accrediting organization whose purposes are to accredit schools and to support schools in their efforts for school improvement. It is a not-for-profit, voluntary membership organization of approximately 9,100 schools in a 19-state region plus schools of the Department of Defense Dependents and Navajo Nation. In Indiana, the NCA CASI represents 561 elementary, middle and secondary, optional special function, unit, college prep and adult/vocational schools.
NCA CASI was originally formed in 1895 as a society to discuss and resolve issues relating to education in the late 1800s. By 1901, the Association had appointed a Commission on Accredited Schools to develop standards for schools. In 1904, the Association approved its first list of 156 accredited schools. Indiana's Emmerich Manual was the first Indiana school to be accredited by this Association, followed shortly by Alexandria-Monroe High School.
In 1965, the Commission began a re-evaluation program requiring self-study and peer review visits on a regular schedule. The requirement was that each member participate in a self-study and team visit at least once during each seven-year cycle (now a five-year cycle). NCA CASI provides a school improvement model focusing on achieving growth in student learning. It is a process for change and accountability. The NCA CASI process requires planning, implementing, and assessing using a data-driven results-oriented model.
