New Ways to Analyze Student Work
Teachers stress ways parents can help students excel in algebra (Princeton, N.J., April 27, 2004) The strategies focus on examining student work to determine how students are approaching algebra concepts and problems. The intensive teacher-training workshop called Algebra Evidence-Centered Teaching and Assessment concentrates on helping students overcome some of the common barriers to grasping algebraic concepts. It is part of the ETS PATHWISE Teachers participating in the algebra program are also being trained to share tips and insights with colleagues in their buildings and corporations. Such peer-to-peer teaching has proven to be highly effective, creating a shared understanding among educators of how to help all students. "One of the biggest boosts for student understanding is encouraging students to talk about algebra and write down their ideas," says Donna Osborn, Indiana high school teacher and president-elect of the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics. "Parents can help students by just asking what they're learning and by supporting them. You don't have to know how to solve problems or teach."

  • What is a CRU?
CRU stands for Certification Renewal Unit. CRUs are credits that may be applied toward license renewal only after earning a master's degree, or after completion of 36 semester hours of approved academic credit beyond the bachelor's degree. One CRU is equivalent to two contact hours in an approved seminar or program. Ninety (90) CRUs are required for renewal. A total of 15 CRUs equals one semester hour. CRUs can be used with semester or quarter hours in any combination provided the equivalent of six semester hours is reached. For a CRU to be valid, the program must be pre-approved. Public school teachers, not Ivy Tech advisors or faculty, are responsible for verifying their own eligibility status, prior to taking the course or seminar.

Indiana - Return to the "What's Happening in the States?" Page - Updated March 14, 1998 Indiana The Indiana General Assembly enacted PL 390 in During the first year of the program, there were 981 new teachers in internships receiving support from mentors. Only 9 of these did not demonstrate minimal competency by the end of the first year, and most of these were rehired for a second year as interns, with the expectation that, with continued work with the mentor, the new teacher would eventually succeed. The article by Elrod & DeGrew describes Indiana's program as collegial and without a formal assessment function for mentors that would lead to the new teacher's licensure. (That is because the principal evaluates the new teacher, not the mentor.) Mentors do observe and coach their proteges however, to help them improve their performance. See Elrod, W. & DeGrew, B. (1991). "Principal's Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Intern and Non intern First Year Teachers". Contemporary Education, 62,212-214. ). "Somebody to Count On" Teaching and Teacher Education. 11(2), 173-188. This finding is interesting in that the state program provides training for the members of the support team. Apparently mentors feel this training is inadequate to their needs, or at least not a practical as they need it to be.

IUS Graduate Study in Education : Master's Degree in Counseling The M.S. in Education with a major in counseling is, at the time of preparation of this bulletin, undergoing some revisions in its curriculum. Individuals seeking admission to this program should check with the program coordinator for program changes. Students entering the IUS program in counseling after June, 2002 will be required to meet new curriculum requirements aligned with the new licensure patterns adopted by the Indiana Professional Standards Board. Students entering the program before June 2002 may earn licensure under the programs identified in this bulletin provided they graduate by June 30, 2006. Students seeking licensure as described in this bulletin who will not be finished by June 30, 2006 should transition to the new program requirements through their advisor as soon as possible after May 30, 2001. The counseling program provides two options: a minimum 48 credit hour program for students without a master’s degree and a minimum 36 credit hour second master’s program for students who already have a master’s degree in education. Both options are designed for part-time attendance. Courses are offered in the evening in the fall and spring semesters and during the day in summer sessions.
