FAST FACTS Accreditations Degrees and Schools Employment Figures Enrollment Trends ... USI Today Founded - Founded in 1965. Campus Beginnings The University of Southern Indiana began as a regional campus of Indiana State University, opening on September 15, 1965. In 1967, Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc., (SIHE) raised nearly $1 million to acquire 1,400 acres for the Mid-America University Center. Groundbreaking was held June 22, 1968. Since September 1969, the University has occupied 330 acres, mostly donated by SIHE. Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc. still owns more than 1,000 acres for development of higher education opportunities. On April 16, 1985, legislation was signed which made USI a separate state university. All legal matters were effective July 1, 1985.
Mission - The University of Southern Indiana is a broad-based institution offering programs of instruction, research, and service. A liberal arts and sciences curriculum serves as the foundation of knowledge for all programs and complements undergraduate programs leading to careers in business, engineering, government, health professions, education, and related fields. Selected master's degrees already in existence, and in development, serve persons in professional and technical studies. As a public institution, the University of Southern Indiana counsels and assists both business and industry and social, educational, governmental, and health agencies to higher levels of efficiency and improved services.

West Lafayette, Indiana 47907-1026
As one of the six regional aquaculture learning centers (Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington), South Putnam conducts two to three workshops a year for beginning and advanced aquaculture instructors from around the nation. The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program and the Cooperative Extension Service have provided instructors for each of the training programs. The South Putnam program received a value-added grant from the state of Indiana to build a mobile aquaculture laboratory. The mobile lab was constructed to transport to other schools and special events (fairs, farm shows, FFA conventions) to outreach, promote and educate students and individuals throughout Indiana and beyond about aquaculture. South Putnam is also working with inner city schools in helping to set up and maintain aquaculture programs within their schools.

Illinois Poverty Level Standards Change-No Real Points for Free and Reduced Lunch Program Scored
Based upon a change made by the Illinois General Assembly in spring on how the level of poverty for its students is determined, school districts in the state should be excited about the policy change; however, with the general state of the Illinois budget, the news may not mean all that much to school district administrators this year. In the past, poverty aid was calculated from estimates taken from the federal census about the number of school children living at a poverty level, but with the recent changes by the Illinois legislature, poverty aid will be granted based upon the number of students reported as eligible for state assistance programs. The new calculation is expected to more accurately show the number of students that are living at a poverty standard, which would increase the subsides available for school districts based upon a poverty standard. But because officials report that the Illinois budget is facing one of its worst revenue crises in state history, the full impact of the changed legislation may not make a big impact immediately.
