Van A. Reidhead Published by the Indiana Historical Society This monograph is a study of how people relate food resources to dietary goals and needs. As the vehicle of analysis, the author has chosen the mathematical modeling technique linear programming, because it was designed to identify how best to relate available resources to desired ends and to make explicit the conditions that determine the relationships between resources and desired ends. The analysis focuses on the test of an hypothesis that is based on the principle of least effort. The hypothesis states that during prehistory people attempted to achieve an adequate nutrient intake at the lowest labor cost.

IMPLEMENTING AN ASSESSMENT PLAN FOR INFORMATION LITERACY
Kristine R. Brancolini (brancoli@indiana.edu) and Erla P. Heyns (heynse@indiana.edu), Indiana University Abstract
The "Assessment Plan for Information Literacy" at Indiana University Bloomington asserts the need for the teaching faculty to form partnerships with librarians to ensure an acceptable level of information literacy for all students. Several projects for implementing the plan will be presented, along with a case study on one School. Paper Our presentation this afternoon will be divided into three parts. First, I will describe the Indiana University "Assessment Plan for Information Literacy," which was adopted in 1996. Then, I will update you on our general progress in implementing the plan over the past two years. Then Erla Heyns will provide specific information about the challenges of implementing the plan in one school, Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The Indiana University "Assessment Plan for Information Literacy" In 1994, Indiana University schools and departments began creating assessment plans in preparation for reaccreditation. At that time there was discussion about an assessment plan for information literacy, but the Libraries were not brought into the process until 1995. I was asked to chair a small committee of four librarians to draft an assessment plan for information literacy. We began our work in the summer of 1995. Although this was considered a difficult assignment, I was interested in drafting an information literacy plan for several reasons.

Dr. Virginia Calvin – 1st Runner Up, Outstanding Science, Technology or Engineering Educator Dr. Virginia Calvin, Chancellor of Ivy Tech State College in South Bend, has played a leadership role as a Steering Committee member of the Indiana Schools SMART Partnership in building the project infrastructure both organizationally and technologically. The Indiana Schools SMART Partnership is a statewide effort between schools and businesses to improve math and science skills of students in grades 6-8. As Superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation, Dr. Calvin led the schools through a comprehensive restructuring, taking the school corporation from a general fund deficit of $3M to a cash balance of $11.2M. Dr. Calvin empowers individuals to change the system, to provide the vision for those changes and to work in partnership with stakeholders to implement change strategies. Her influence on students is primarily through improved, efficient and more effective education systems. Dr. Calvin received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Alcorn State University, her M.A. in Elementary Education/Reading from New Mexico Highlands University, and her Ed.D. Early Childhood Education, Counseling and Special Education from Texas Women’s University.

http://www.edweek.org/sreports/tc/policy/states/in.htm
Indiana doesn't provide much in the way of state aid for educational technology, so a district's progress depends largely on the interest and wealth of its local community. "We're a locally oriented state; that's the Indiana way," says Phyllis Land Usher, an assistant superintendent in the state education department. Join our on-line Town Meeting to discuss what role technology should play in education reform.
That mindset may also help explain the dearth of statewide data on school technology. The department of education conducted a survey this year, but technology spending is hard to track in many districts' budgets, and some districts were confused about what to count as a computing device. As a result, no one puts much stock in the survey's results. "We can tell you segments of what is being spent on technologyoverall, no," says Mike Huffman, who was appointed in August to fill a new position: special assistant to the state superintendent for technology. Part of Huffman's job will be to improve information gathering about technology. State Education Agency Web Site:

General Requirements for Advanced Degrees
The following statements regarding degree requirements outline the minimal that are acceptable. The student must meet not only the general requirements of the University Graduate School but also the specific requirements of the individual department(s). Requirements are given in this bulletin only for degrees awarded by the University Graduate School. Professional graduate degrees are also available at Indiana University (such as the Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Education, and Doctor of Music degrees). These professional degrees are administered by the respective schools; information regarding these degrees and the requirements for each may be found in the bulletins of the individual schools.
Academic Integrity Students are expected to adhere to the highest ethical standards in all their course work and research. Individuals violating that code of conduct are subject to disciplinary action; such breaches could lead to expulsion of the student from Indiana University or to recision of a degree already granted. To acquaint students more fully with the range of issues relating to academic integrity, the University Graduate School has prepared a document entitled Integrity in Graduate Study , which deals with plagiarism, fraud, and conflicts of interest, among other topics. Copies of that document may be obtained from departmental offices or from the office of the University Graduate School, Kirkwood Hall 111. Every student should be familiar with its contents.
