Libraries and Student Achievement "No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings." William Blake Programs That Support the OHS Library: How Libraries Affect Student Achievement According to The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement published in 1993:
  • Schools with better funded Library Media Centers have better than average test scores, Library Media expenditures academic achievement: the higher the expenditure, the higher the achievement, and Students who are in schools in which Library Media Centers are active participants in the instructional process are higher academic achievers.
  • Strong school libraries increase student achievement, regardless of a school community's socioeconomic status. Technology Connection , May/June 1998 What makes a school library "strong"?
    • A full-time, certificated school library media teacher to collaborate with teachers in co-designing instruction that incorporates information literacy into the curriculum. Mrs. Lewis, the OHS Library Media Teacher, has been a teacher in the OUHSD since 1979 and a part of the teaching staff at OHS since 1995. She provides orientation programs to all freshman English classes each fall, collaborates with teachers on lesson design throughout the year, offers introductory lessons on information literacy skills to classes doing research, and maintains the OHS Internet Resource Page so educationally sound web pages compliment the books on the shelf and both support the classroom curriculum.

    Policy 2521
IV. Student Access to Networked Information Resources
The Board of School Trustees of the Monroe County Community School Corporation recognizes that as technologies affect the manner in which information may be accessed, communicated and transferred by members of society, those changes may also alter instruction and student learning. Telecommunications, electronic information services and networked services significantly alter the information landscape by opening schools, classrooms and library media centers to a broader array of resources. The Board generally supports access by students to rich information resources along with the development by staff of appropriate skills to analyze and evaluate such resources. In making decisions regarding student access to telecommunications and networked information resources, the Monroe County Community School Corporation considers its own stated educational mission, goals and objectives. This policy (2521) requires that all instructional and library media materials support and enrich the curriculum while taking into account the varied instructional needs, learning styles, abilities and developmental levels of the students. Telecommunications, including video, audio and text services, because they may be connected to any publicly available source in the world, will open classrooms to electronic information resources which may not have been specifically chosen or previewed for use by students of various ages.
