From Dana Metzger Wow, its great to see a page like this on the net! With it I have been able to track down at least one old friend from back in my high school days. This is Dana Metzger a graduate of the class of 1989. After graduation Iheaded off to school at the University of Nebraska where I received my degree in English Literature and History. From there I enlisted in the Air Force and have been stationed in Missouri, Texas, Florida, Germany, Saudi Arabia and California. I received my commission as an officer in 1999 and am still in the Air Force, just getting paid a little more for it!

It's still dark when she leaves the house on the south side of Chicago for the 45-minute ride on two buses to her high school. OFFICER: Forward, march. The Chicago military academy, Bronzeville, the nation's first public high school run by the Army's Junior Officer Training Corps. OFFICER: Left, left, right, left. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: The Chicago military academy was a dream of many in Chicago, but the guiding force was the current superintendent, Retired Brigadier General Frank Bacon. BRIG. Our goals here is 100 percent graduation, 90 percent of that group go to college, and 90 percent of that group will graduate from college, and 70 percent will go on scholarships that we are able to identify here at this school.

Two school innovators provide lesson for S.F.
by Sally Pipes
Charter schools are deregulated public schools that gain freedom from regulation in return for meeting the goals of their establishing charter. Over the past decade charter schools have proven an effective way to promote parental choice, high standards, and local control. But these gains have not been achieved without a fight. In California, charter applicants must win approval from the local school district for their charter, a contract enabling them to operate as a public school with independent oversight. Only if rejected can they appeal to the state. While most of the 344 public charter schools in California have charters from their home school districts, many have gone to an outside district for approval, a move permitted under state law. The state board of education granted charters in two cases, one from Oakland. The first cadets are 162 highly motivated seventh-graders, 67 percent male and 90 percent African American or Latino. Parents are highly satisfied with the tough standards and discipline. Plans are set to expand OMI through high school.

Sitting on the northern edge of the county, about three miles south of the Michigan state line, Howe is the first southbound stop off the Indiana I-80/90 Toll Road, a major east-west highway which is one of the main arteries bringing business to the county. Visitors to the campus enjoy the Sunday drill parades during the summer. Lakes and campgrounds also dot the area around Howe. The town is known for its restaurants, including a popular ice cream shop, and the many small, yet thriving, businesses in the area. HISTORY: Howe, which was settled in 1834, was the first white settlement in LaGrange County. The town was then called Mongoquinong because the area was called the Mongoquinong Prairie by the Potawatomi Indians, who were native to the region.
