N o brief in the Michigan litigation attracted as much attention, or so clearly influenced the Supreme Court majority, as that submitted by former high-ranking officers and civilian leaders of the United States armed forces. The story they told was both compelling and chilling. It was the story of what happens when important institutions do not integrate their elite. In the case of the military, the leaders argued, lives and military effectiveness were lost. Those of us in the legal profession should recognize that an equally compelling, and chilling, story can be told about our system of justice. The Supreme Court brief supporting affirmative action was signed by military luminaries, pragmatic and clear-eyed men whom no one would associate with “political correctness.” The signatories included generals like Wesley Clark and Norman Schwarzkopf, admirals like Dennis Blair and Archie Clemins, former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff like Admiral William Crowe, former Secretaries of Defense William Cohen and William Perry, Senators like Max Cleland, former head of the Veteran’s Administration, Bud MacFarlane, President Reagan’s National Security Advisory, former heads of the Armed Forces Service Academies, and a host of others of equal military credibility and experience, if not equal public recognition.

Several colleges will make planned visits to your high school in the fall.  Check with your guidance counselor as to the dates and times for scheduled meetings and sign-up procedures. Students may also meet with representatives of colleges and universities from across the country by attending the Greater Evansville College Fair.  The college fair is held the first Sunday of October on the University of Southern Indiana Campus from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The Internet has become a good resource for students wanting specific information about a particular college or university. Important: Make a campus visit before making your final college selection.

Kristen Lueking
I come from a family of teachers; my mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and six aunts and uncles are current or former teachers. We often pity the other members of the family who must sit around the holiday dinner table or a birthday barbecue and listen to discussion and debate of standards, curriculum, and the latest antics of this year's particularly challenging student. However, they never complain. Anyone married or related to a teacher knows that being an educator is more than a career choice; it is a lifestyle choice. It is choosing books over business trips, schools over stock options, and kids over cash. Yet, despite the daily frustration and overwhelming challenges we face as educators, we go back for more because, in truth, we love it. My diverse teaching experiences over the last five years have brought me here to HGSE and the School Leadership Program to begin the next phase of what I hope will be a long career in education. I chose the HGSE School Leadership Program because I have found quality leadership to be the most desperate need in all types of schools and educational organizations. The School Development strand of the Leadership Program is providing me with a comprehensive view of education, including school design, teaching methods, and nonprofit management. This broad understanding of what makes an effective school will equip me to lead in a variety of education roles in both schools and organizations. The real strength of this program is the people who both teach and learn in it; the faculty is truly passionate about education, and they model effective and inspirational leadership in their ongoing work and teaching. My diverse group of colleagues have also proven to be a wealth of knowledge and an excellent resource in my learning. In just a few short months, those of us in the leadership program have created a community that I expect will last far beyond our time at HGSE.

Kentucky, Indiana chosen for school study
Five states will help hone reading, math, writing standards By Dick Kaukas
The Courier-Journal Kentucky and Indiana are among five states chosen for a national effort to develop standards aimed at assuring businesses and colleges that high school graduates are proficient in reading, writing and math. The effort, called the American Diploma Project, is being funded by a $2.5 million grant from the Hewlett Foundation, based in Menlo Park, Calif. Sheila Byrd, director of the project, said all 50 states were invited to submit applications, and about 15 did so. The five states that were selected all have had experience with legislated education reform, she said. The other states chosen are Massachusetts, Texas and Nevada. Byrd said project organizers wanted to make sure that the participating states were spread across the country. Details of the project are still being worked out, Byrd said, and will be addressed during a meeting Friday in Washington. But in general, she said, the study will try to determine the graduation standards for reading, writing and math in each of the five states and to compare them with the expectations of businesses, colleges and universities.

Summer in the Skies 2000
"Summer in the Skies" is a special program created by ISD high school science teacher,
Teresa Huckleberry. It is a direct result of the knowledge and expertise she gained
from being selected as Indiana’s 1994 recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship.
This fellowship is presented annually to a teacher in each of the 50 states, in memory
of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died when the space shuttle Challenger exploded
shortly after liftoff on January 28, 1986. The Christa McAuliffe Fellowship allowed Teresa
to become a licensed pilot and provided the funding to purchase computer-based
flight simulators for her classroom. Summer in the Skies has been in existence since
1997 and has presented "graduation wings" to 6-8 students each year. Summer in the Skies is a four-week summer school program that uses flying as the hook
to get students interested in math, science, history, reading, and writing. The program focuses on hands-on realistic applications, out-of-state field trips, and actual flight time in a single engine aircraft.
