Indiana - Geography Midwestern state in the N central United States. It is bordered by Lake Michigan and the state of Michigan (N), Ohio (E), Kentucky, across the Ohio R. (S), and Illinois (W). Northern Indiana is a glaciated lake area, separated by the Wabash River from the central agricultural plain, which is rich with deep glacial drift. The southern portion of the state is a succession of bottomlands interspersed with knolls and ridges, gorges and valleys. Limestone caves, such as the big Wyandotte Cave, and mineral springs, as at French Lick and West Baden Springs, are found there. The unglaciated soil is shallow in S Indiana, and the cutting of timber has caused erosion, but there is still extensive farming. The capital and largest city is Indianapolis, in the central part of the state. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, with a 3-mi (4.8-km) frontage on Lake Michigan, is noted for its beautiful shifting sand dunes. Formerly a state park, the area was made a National Lakeshore in 1966. Four years earlier, in 1962, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in S Indiana. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the famous 500-mi (800-km) auto race, held annually.

You’ll have the opportunity to discover your world from a variety of perspectives-whether it’s using geographic information systems to map Marquette County, observing weather and climate on the shore of Lake Superior, or experiencing eco-tourism in Costa Rica. Unlike many universities where lower-division courses are taught by part-time faculty members or graduate students, all of our classes are taught by full-time faculty members. Because our class sizes are typically small (ranging from 20-40 students for classes above the 100 level), you’ll get personalized attention from professional faculty members who are dedicated to teaching.

For a project on 17th-19th century Chickasaw geography:
Would appreciate any leads on early Chickasaw terminology for the area of
western Kentucky and Tennessee known as the Jackson Purchase. I'm
particularly interested in what the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and
Cumberland Rivers were called by the Chickasaw, and whether the Duck and
Elk Rivers were translations of Chickasaw or other Muskhogean terms. All
the documentation I have seen thus far is in European languages or in
modern Chickasaw.

geography. Apr 1842, Liberty. 1846, Union. County Seat, Bluffton. City of Bluffton official city website; Access indiana information about Bluffton/Wells County;
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inwells/history.html
History In 1829, Dr. Joseph Knox built a cabin on the Wabash River about five miles below the present county seat of Bluffton. Two years later, Allen Norcross settled on the opposite bank. From 1834 to 1836, the area saw rapid immigration. Early settlers faced a 5-8 day journey by horse to carry their grist to a mill some 60 miles through the wilderness. Some drowned on the journey. (See more about early history...) Wells County was created February 7, 1835 out of territory attached to Allen Delaware , and Randolph counties. Since then, there have been no boundary changes. Organized in 1837, the county was named in honor of Indian agent William Wells , son-in-law of Chief Little Turtle Further information about the history of Wells County is available online from The Wells County Historical Society. Using Literature To Teach Geography in High Schools. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Traditionally, the high school curriculum has been rigidly compartmentalized. Yet, linkages between disciplines in the curriculum increasingly are being made, such as the connections of English to U.S. History courses in many high schools. Another connection may be English with World Geography courses. Students of every ability level could benefit from exploring the interrelationship between these two disciplines. In this ERIC Digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and folk tales. It consists of narrative as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books, and news articles. By no means, however, should literature be the sole tool used to teach geography or other subjects of the social studies. Rather, each form of narrative and expository writing has its place in the social studies curriculum.

National Council for Geographic Education Advanced Professional Certification in Geography The National Council for Geographic Education announces an opportunity for K- 12 teachers to obtain Advanced Professional Certification in Geography. Advanced Professional Certification in Geography provides evidence to peers, administrators, school boards, students, and the public at large that the holder exceeds the norms and is well-prepared academically, is effective in the classroom, continues in self-education, is professionally active, and demonstrates active participation and leadership in geographic education.
RATIONALE:
The NCGE certification program recognizes that geography is an integrative discipline, broadly relevant within the curriculum. In its mission to explain the spatial aspects of earth's environment, it necessarily organizes, analyzes, and applies information from both the natural (physical) and human (cultural) worlds. The wide acceptance of the Five Themes of Geography - Location, Place (Physical and Human Characteristics), Human/Environment Interaction, Movement (Relationships between Places), and Regions - and an awareness of the systematic structure of the discipline give definition to the scope of geography within this certification program. Application for Advanced Professional Certification in Geography is open to all who teach geography as a distinct subject or who exceed the norm in incorporating the perspectives of geography into social studies, science, language arts, special education, or other classes.
