  • The National Map featured in Geospatial Solutions June 2004 Issue June 2004
Geospatial Solutions The National Map : Open for Business by Carl Reed. This feature article describes how The National Map is being built through a network of partnerships using open standards such as the OpenGis Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service interface. Ken Boyko, System Design Chair for The National Map , is quoted in the article and states that "We'll know we've ultimately been successful when agencies and GIS users begin to write their own applications tapping into the various services we provide." The National Map 's first partner, the State of Delaware, shows how its Data and Mapping Integration Laboratory ( DataMIL ) offers 19 publicly available GIS-based Web services using OGC Web Mapping Services, one of which is dedicated to The National Map and includes all statewide base-layer data.

  • Meaford , Ontario -(Offsite-Link) Re-Visit John Muir's Meaford Experience on June 13, 1998! - Muir wrote, "When I came to the Georgian Bey of Lake Huron, whose waters are so transparent and beautiful, and the forests about its shores with their ferny, mossy dells and deposits of boulder clay, it seemed to be a most favorable place for study... In a beautiful dell, only a mile or two from the magnificent bay, I fortunately found work in a factory where there was a sawmill and lathes for turning out rakes, broom, and fork handles, etc." Muir worked at Trout's mill for a year and a half, greatly improving the efficiency of output of rake handles by making efficiency improvements. But on February 21 of 1866, the factory building and all of its contents took fire, thus ending Muir's Meaford sojourn.

JOHN J. WATKINS / THE TIMES With the help of his teacher, Cheryl Maka, St. John Bosco eighth-grader Thomas Carson has qualified for the state competition in the National Geographic Bee. This is the first time the school has had a student qualify for the competition. History made in geography HAMMOND: Thomas Carson is first St. John Bosco student to qualify for National Geographic Bee.

HAMMOND Every year since 1990, Cheryl Maka, a social studies teacher at St. John Bosco School in Hammond, has tried to qualify a student for the National Geographic Bee. This year, Thomas Carson made Maka's dreams come true.
"He is an exceptional student, a very bright young man who really retains what he learns," Maka said. "Every now and again, you get a student who is interested in a whole lot of subject matter, and he is that student." The National Geographic Bee takes place in schools with students from fourth through eighth grade across the country in December and January. Each school champion takes a written test upon winning the Bee in their school.

"Geography for Life: National Geography Standards 1994" is a major contribution to social studies and geographical education. It specifies what students in American schools should learn and be able to do with regard to geography. There are six essential elements of geography into which 18 standards are grouped. ELEMENT 1: THE WORLD IN SPATIAL TERMS Maps, photographs, and satellite images are principal tools for investigating the relationships between people, places, and environments. When information is shown using those tools, it is in a spatial context. The spatial context for geography is the Earth. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 1) How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. (Standard 2) How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context. (Standard 3) How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface. ELEMENT 2: PLACES AND REGIONS People are attached to particular places and regions. Regions and places have been given meaning by people, and in turn those places and regions help people to organize and understand the complex world. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 4) The physical and human characteristics of places. (Standard 5) That people create regions to interpret Earth's complexity. (Standard 6) How culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions.
