The city of Gary is located at the southern end of Lake Michigan approximately 28 miles from Chicago in an area called the Calumet region, which includes the northern portions of Lake and Porter counties. Gary is in a region of frequently changeable weather. The climate is predominantly continental, ranging from relatively warm in summer to relatively cold in winter. However, the continental aspect is partially modified by Lake Michigan. Very low temperatures most often occur in air that flows southward to Lake Superior before reaching the Gary area. In summer, the higher temperatures result from a south or southwest flow and therefore are not modified by the lake. Area: 50.2 square miles (1990) Elevation: 590 feet above sea level Average Temperature: January: 24.8 F; July 73.6 F; annual avg: 48.9 F Average Annual Precipitation: 34.66 inches (39.2 inches of snowfall)
