The Land that is now Indiana was once part of a great wilderness. By early 1700's, the wilderness was called New France, a few settlers, fur traders and explorers had seen this wild land, but few records were kept. Some explorers bought slaves with them, so it is very likely that blacks were among the first to explore Indiana. The first records of blacks in Indiana were written in 1746. There were forty white men and five Negroes in a French settlement on the Wabash River. This was the beginning of the city Vincennes; which is along Indiana's southwestern border. Some French settlers had Indian slaves, but soon the French were buying black men from trading post on the lower Mississippi River. In 1787, congress passed a group of laws called the Northwest Ordinance. One of the Laws indicated that there would be no slavery. Slavery was legal when Virginia still owned the land which is now Indiana. Slave holders soon found ways to bring slaves into the territory as long-term indentured servants. Substantial debates continue about the status of blacks in the state. Indiana was perceived as a hostile state toward people of color during the most unfriendly years of 1816-1865. Many thought that indentured servitude was just another form of slavery. In 1831, legislators passed a bill to keep 'Negroes' out of Indiana.

It may be worth your time to check for your surname in them. Note#2: The lineages I have here on my family has NOT had everything PROVEN when my records were destroyed (not once, but twice) I have had to start over from old letters and info I had sent to family members as well as from letters and emails and info that others have sent to me. I do not know if they have or have not proven what they gave me and then there is also always a chance that I made a typo as I entered into my databases. Use these as a guide to finding the proof and as leads, not as 100% proven fact. Thanks. OLD SAYINGS OF OUR ANCESTORS AND RELATIVES Hit a Brick Wall? Try these GENEALOGY/COMPUTER LESSONS AND TIPS

  • The Taming of the Wilderness: Indiana's Transition from Indian Hunting Grounds to Hoosier Farmland: 1800 to 1875 , by Leon Hesser - This new book approaches 19th Century Indiana history through early documents, letters and the author's own Quaker family history. It boldly addresses Native American and slavery issues which arose during this era of Indiana's history, while not neglecting the simple, day-to-day lifestyles of the early settlers, as related by those who lived during this era. It is available for sale as an e-book or in either paperback or hardcover.

Possibly a digital image folder of the entire 1970 yearbook. I've been informed that one person lost theirs in a fire. If I feel ambitious, I may put it on CD-ROM. I will update this site during the transfer. After the transfer, I hope to be adding additional search capabilities and more. Additionally, with Front Page 2002 support on the new web host, the site will be much easier to maintain and publish in the manner I'd like to achieve. The old site ( www.users.qwest.net/~lawrencek
