Internships Recent Experiences of Our Interns Christy Powers is a junior in the School of Social Work at Indiana University. She was a summer intern for the Interim Deputy Director of the Indiana Bureau of Child Development, Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA). She was involved in projects such as the Facility Financing Loan Program, the Search Committee for Deputy Director, the Building Bright Beginnings, and the Development of Web Based Instruction for Child Care Providers. She learned a lot about administrative social work by attending meetings, making professional contacts, and communicating with child care providers. She appreciated the opportunity FASR offered and learned a lot about the government system from my internship. The Facility Financing Loan Program is a partnership between FSSA, the Indiana Development Finance Authority, and SCORE. The program offers CAP loans to licensed child care providers who need to renovate their centers or build a new one. Christy made follow up calls to the providers to make sure they received adequate services.

For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children Indiana
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002
Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. Indiana has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in Indiana and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in Indiana The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*

Family Practice Residency Program
At Westview Hospital, family practice residents enjoy advantages not found at larger facilities. Here, the process of healing takes place in human, not institutional dimensions. Westview prides itself on being flexible and attentive to individual needs, and our training of family practice residents reflects these same values. The life of a Westview Resident Westview is dedicated to self-motivation - the idea that an individual is responsible for pursuing his or her own education. Medical staff members teach quality patient care through example and encourage each resident to continually strive to exceed the standard of care. Westview's Family Practice Residency Program is designed to produce physicians who are capable of definitively managing 90-95 percent of the clinical problems they face, acutely and on a continuing basis. Both well-established and innovative methods in patient care are incorporated into the program. Office-based experience helps you understand and implement preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative and health maintenance programs for your patients. A basic core curriculum provides a comparable educational experience for all graduates. Some rotations (OB/Gyn) are completed at Wishard Hospital. Some elective time will be selectives. They include (but are not limited to): osteopathic medicine, family practice, proctology, otorhinolaryngology, urology, anesthesia and orthopedics. You'll also spend three half-days each week in a clinic, regularly following patients and families assigned to you.
