Student Information
Indiana State University graduates from the Master’s programs have been recognized at local, state, and national levels. Two recent Masters graduates, Susan Kiger and Makuba Lihono have completed doctorates within the study period, and three recent graduates are currently enrolled in doctoral programs, Carol Werhan at University of Akron, Sherrie Eaton Bin Dhar at Indiana State University and Kathleen Blade at Yale University. A Sample of accomplishments of Master's Degree Alumni in the past five years include: Lesa Frederick Cagle (Dietetics) (1989) received the Recognized Young Dietitian Award from the Indiana Dietetic Association also in 1997. She is currently president of the Indiana Dietetic Association. Cherry Chanley (1994) is currently Indiana Dietetic Association Clinical Practice chair and serves as the RD member of the Indiana Dietitians Certifications Board. Jeff Novick (2001) is currently Vice President of the National Health Association. Jeff has been interviewed an appeared in the media many time including appearances in Shape magazine, Newsday, Women's World, Women's Day and Men's Health. He was also a guest on Talk America Radio.

Living Poor in Indiana , the 1999 volume of the Status of Indiana Families Today (SIFT) is a publication of the Center for Families in collaboration with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Indiana University Business Research Center. SIFT provides a comprehensive assessment of poverty in the state and information about how policy changes Indiana families. SIFT offers county-by-county information and compares Indiana to its neighbors to provide accurate information about families. Consistent with the Center for Families mission, SIFT is a tool to inform and support research-based educational outreach that can support family-friendly policies, programs, and services.

    The MHA provides these services on a daily basis, as an integral part of who we are, to anyone who calls, writes or visits our office. A continually updated referral directory allows us to assist those who are in need of mental health services in Lake County and the surrounding areas. The Mental Health Association provided advocacy and referrals to over 500 individuals.
    Girls Inc.® The Girls Inc. Curriculum is used to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold through self-esteem building activities and discussions in order to promote abstinence. The program is presented in a classroom or in a small group, girls receive the personal skills and empowerment they need to avoid unwanted pregnancy and achieve personal success. Over 700 adolescents were inspired by Girls Inc. in 2002.

    To foster supportive environments that optimize growth and development and encourage resilient and healthy families A Family Resource Specialist will describe the program, enroll participants, and talk to families about their feelings and needs. When families participate in HFLC, a Family Support Specialist will visit weekly, assisting with the healthy development of their children.

    The Youth and Family Programs Department strives to serve as a catalyst throughout Indiana to foster relationships between businesses, governmental agencies, educational institutions, youth service agencies, churches and other community based organizations. This department serves as a clearinghouse for quality chapter youth programs that address issues affecting youth while preparing them for full participation in society as adults. And finally, this department actively involves IBE staff and volunteers in program administration so that they keep abreast of issues and trends affecting African-American families and youth. Below are some of the programs: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest Essay writing contest open to middle/junior high school students and to senior high school students. The contest has a different theme each year, but always centers around the life and legacy of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This essay contest is traditionally co-sponsored by the Indiana Pacers. Winners take home savings bonds and tickets to Indiana Pacers games. The grand prize winner is also awarded a trip to Atlanta to watch the Pacers play the Atlanta Hawks, as well as visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change.     Goals
    • Improve the ability of no less than 100 families in each of two Indiana regions (to be determined) to care for their CSHCN in the community. Improve the ability of no less than 20 health care professionals to provide a medical home for no less than 50 families of children with special health care needs.
    Activities
    • Develop the infrastructure to provide information, peer support, and education to families regarding health care financing issues. Produce a newsletter and information packets to provide information to families of CSHCN in the two identified regions. Conduct regional workshops on health care financing and provide technical and financial assistance to support family participation.
