Rod Haywood, lecturer of Business Communications, also served, in 2003 as the Executive Director for 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc., a non-profit organization that focuses its time and effort on outreach services to Indianapolis youth. Mr. Haywood is also the founder and director of a mentoring program called the Planning for College Institute which brings inner-city high school students from all around Indiana who are deciding whether or not college is the right choice for them. One of his nominators commented that "Mr. Haywood's presence and his desire to influence others has profoundly changed the students' perception of their lives and their futures…he has changed my life and countless others." Another nominator indicated that Professor Haywood's approach to diversity was not constrained to only one week, day or lecture topic; his commitment to diversity permeated every aspect of the class. Mark Brostoff, associate director of Undergraduate Career Services at IUB is the professional staff member recognized for his efforts to foster diversity at the Kelley School of Business. Mr. Brostoff found that many students needed guidance in the area of selecting careers in corporations and work-places that create and foster a culture of diversity. To meet this need he conducted the first diversity and career education workshop for the GLBT community at Indiana University - Bloomington in February of 2002.

    Research
    Developmental and Cell Biology
Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. The object of these investigations is to gain an understanding of the nucleocytoplasmic interactions in cells.
