NOTE: For information about the Discover Camp Web site, call the National Center on Accessibility at 812-856-4422 (voice) and 812-856-4421 (tty) or send e-mail to jskulski@indiana.edu BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Parents want their children's camp experiences to be fun and memorable. The planning leading up to camp, however, can be intense and overwhelming, particularly for the parents of children with disabilities. Help is on the way. Recreation and disability experts at Indiana University Bloomington have launched a Web site designed to give parents the information they need to find the camps best suited for their children. Discover Camp http://ncaonline.org/discover/ ) is an on-line resource for parents whose children with disabilities are going to camp for the first time. The guide, prepared with insights from parents, answers such questions as how to select a camp and whether to attend open houses or meet with camp staff. The Web site includes a database of camps accredited by the American Camping Association, with links to camps across the country. Discover Camp was created by the National Center on Accessibility in collaboration with Bradford Woods Outdoor Center, both programs of the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Advice to parents who discover their child is autistic
For the benefit of parents just finding out that their son or daughter is autistic, I posed the following question to the AUTISM mailing list: I just discovered my son is autistic. What should I do? This memo includes all the answers I received to the above question. First is the message I sent to the net, followed by the replies that I received. Thanks very much to all who replied and gave me permission to include their answers in this memo. John Wobus

I just saw a new book out on Parenting Your Child with Autism and I think it might be a real gem. I'll get it, read it, and if it passes the muster, get you a citation. Michael Powers book, A Parent's Guide, would also be a good first read. I'd also love to help you flesh out other stuff that comes along and dig up gems from the archives, if you want. I did a post once a while back on getting a diagnosis from a developmental pediatrician that seemed to have a positive impact on those who were reading at the time. Lynda Huggins had a great one on sensory integration a while back, too. Just let me know how I can help, meanwhile, I'll get after that new book for you. THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC A small but growing number of school-aged children will not routinely spend time in a school classroom this year. Instead, these children engage in HOME SCHOOLINGthat is, they will pursue learning at home or elsewhere in the community. There is no one way to do it. One family may begin with opening ceremonies to signal the start of the daily routine and follow a scheduled curriculum. Another family may opt for child-led learning, where parents provide help as the child expresses interest in a topic. Usually parents provide supervision and help, but most children assume increasing responsibility for choosing and carrying out projects as they mature. Most families involved in home schooling organize activities with other families. Some children spend part of their time at a local public or private school, or a nearby college.
