Attorney Fees
Basic Definitions Being An Advocate Case Law ... Other Resources Special Education Law Dorene Philpot is an Indianapolis attorney who represents children with special needs and their parents all over the state of Indiana.
Often this means going to a due process hearing in order to force the schools to comply with the federal and state protections afforded children with special needs.
Parents frequently do not know what their children's rights are in terms of the education and services offered by the schools, and they frequently feel intimidated by school staffs during case conference committee meetings and feel that they have little input into the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
These problems can have serious impact and their children's progress can be hampered by that lack of knowledge.
"What we have is what you get" is NOT what the federal and state laws provide.
The schools are required, by law, to devise an INDIVIDUALIZED education program for a child, based on that child's individual needs (not on the school's staffing or budget problems) that is reasonably calculated to confer MEANINGFUL educational benefit.

Posts: 72 What's an IEP? (and other special needs) My husband and I are being considered for the adoption of two siblings in Colorado (we're from Indiana, which I've heard has a tough person in charge of ICPC!).
Anyway, their profile is a little vague, so I was hoping someone could define the medical terms in "plain English" for us:
1. "The children's developmental challenges are met with an Individualized Education Plan." (What does this mean? Would they be behind academically, or is it physical/developmental?)
2. They "...have difficulty focusing on one activity at a time" and "take medication and receive therapeutic services." (For what? Adhd? Something else?)
3. They also "receive weekly physical, speech, and occupational therapies to help them with coordination, muscle tone, and speech impediments."

Students with disabilitities receive friendship and support from general education peers.
Everyone can remember a best buddy he or she had in high school someone to share the highs and lows, to look to for support when things get a little out of hand, a person with whom to exchange hopes and dreams. At Bel Air High School and several other schools in the county, the term 'Best Buddy' has taken on a new definition. Part of a national program, the effort pairs a student with physical and/or mental special needs with a volunteer student from the general education rolls, encouraging the two to take part in school and social activities both during the school day and away from school. Nancy L. Davis, sixth year Special Education teacher at Bel Air High, started the school's chapter of 'Best Buddies' four years ago. "Best Buddies is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of students with special needs by providing one-to-one friendships," said Ms. Davis. "We have a meeting at least once a month and some of our activities have included a pizza party, bowling, movies, and going to Friendly's for ice cream.
